nay-sah might be a better comparison...

the E in nessa is like the E in get

yup, I know... nay-sah was an example on how not to pronounce it....

Aaaah!

No, Nay-sah is how you *should* pronounce it! And Ney-sah and Nay-sah sound the same!

Neh-sah is how *not* to pronounce it.

Right?

no, she said her name sounds like mesa, which on further reflection probably isn't quite right....

she said it was short for vanessa... so I am assuming you pronounce it like that without the VA... maybe it sounds like "mess a"

I assume that in Brazil, Vanessa is pronounced as Va-nay-sah. The problem is that Americans assume the "e" is short, as in "get", when it's not.

ETA: Good thing everyone here can just type Nessa and be done with it!

We always have to tell everyone to pronounce Yuibi's name as U-B. Especially with Texans trying to say it- they usually pronounce it Yu-EEE-bee with lots of emphasis on the I. The i is really short if its correctly pronounced. Yuibi never seems to be bothered by people just calling him U-B though. :x

Sadly, no one can pronounce MY last name here. I don't know if they'll have less trouble with Yuibi's or not. My last name is Grizzle and I get: Grizzly, Grizzel, Grizzwald. I don't really understand how people can't pronounce it. XD It's not like there aren't tons of words with the same ending (Drizzle, Sizzle, etc). Bleh :P

ê

like ‘e’ in ‘net’, or a cross between the ‘ea’ of ‘ear’ and the ‘ai’ of ‘air’.

é

like ‘e’ in ‘net’, or like the ‘e’ in ‘chalet’.

I think we've shown that Nessa will never have the luxury of having her name pronounced correctly here in the U.S.

It's like when my husband teaches me a word in Arabic and I repeat it and he laughs at me... :P

well if you had to pronounce without listening to the proper pronounciation, you wouldn't be able to do so, but you would be able to pronounce correctly if you listened to it, unless, of course, you have some hearing problem or some learning disorder.
