I don't think someone should change their name's pronunciation. Or even americanize their name. I knew a girl named Michael in school and I have heard of boys named Michel. I enjoyed the fact that they had unique names for their gender.

My husband's name is Mina (which sounds like a girl's name - Tina, Dina, Rena, etc. -and I have heard of a couple of other girls with the name). It is not common male name in the US. When I heard it, it threw me off for a second. But, I wouldn't want him to change it!

My name had to be changed, though. After coming to Egypt, Niki became Nicole. But, that wasn't for pronunciation facilitation, that was because my name means the F word in Arabic.

Meeting my in laws:

I want you to meet my new wife. F#$%%! :):jest:

P.S. - One of my good friends is a Uri, but it is short for URIEL. Nice name Pedroh!!

thanks ^ ^

my dad got that name from the book from the infamous Uri Geller, just changed the I for the Y.. I know old schoolers here remember that dude

My name is French and hyphonated. People just don't get it.

Marie-Josée. Should sound " Mah-Ree-Jo-Zay"

I had problems with few ID's where they were putting Josée as a middle name. I dropped the Josée when I try to make appointments on the phone for unofficial stuff, like hair salon or vet. So it's just Marie.

Now my French accent really confuses people. My husband said not to pronounce "May-Ree" because that stands for Mary. But when I try to say Marie "Mah-Ree" I sound like Murray, which in Quebec would be said like "Muh-Ray" and not "Meuh-Ree"...whatever, even the simplest name is butchered.

So it's Marie with IE and not Y. lol

Nessa, yours would be that rhymes with mesa, unless in portuguese is not how I'd expect either.

I always imagined Nessa to be pronounced "Ney-sah". In the UK Nessa is normally the shortened version of Vanessa. :)

It's like Laura said, like mesa, not ney-sah, and not NEH-sah like people say in the states. And my name is a shortened version of Vanessa, btw.

No, Nay-sah is how you *should* pronounce it! And Ney-sah and Nay-sah sound the same!

Neh-sah is how *not* to pronounce it.

Right?

no, she said her name sounds like mesa, which on further reflection probably isn't quite right....

she said it was short for vanessa... so I am assuming you pronounce it like that without the VA... maybe it sounds like "mess a"
