That's how it usually is in the U.S. too. But it doesn't really surprise me that names would be pronounced differently in various countries. Even in countries where the first language is English, words are commonly spoken differently.

For instance... one time, maybe a year ago or more, while my fiancee (then my girlfriend) and I were talking, we came across the fact we pronounced the word "foyer" differently. My fiancee is from Canada (although she's not a French-Canadian, her first name is French and it seems many Canadians and Americans end up misspelling and mispronouncing it) and so Canadians tend to have a mix of British and American English, but she said "foyer" is pronounced as "foy-yay." I pronounce "foyer" as "foy-yur."

I had never heard her version of "foyer" before (except if people were joking and pretending to be snooty) and she said she had never heard my version, except if people were joking and pretending to be uneducated. Shortly following this exchange, I decided to look up information about this on the Internet and what I found is that in American English, "foyer" is almost always said "foy-yur" whereas in other English-speaking countries it's said "foy-yay."

Same word, same meaning, different pronunciation. I found some other words that differ in pronunciation between American English and British/Canadian/Australian English as well. Canadian English is actually the closest (in most ways) to how American English is set up, probably due to the amount of American media that is sent over there.

Oh, and if anyone's interested in knowing... after I told my fiancee about the whole "American vs Canadian English" thing, she understood. However, because I know it probably bothered her just the same, I switched from saying "foyer" to "entry" since there's no difference in how that word is pronounced. Never let it be said that I am not accommodating.

they always spell it with a k, and pronounce it as 'ehnkhea'.

i understand why, though: the alphabet sounds a lot different in romanian than english, so i don't really care anymore. as long as my husband says it correctly.

in a way i amuse myself when people are unsecure about how to say my name. the faces...

i got used to correct them in a nice way when they're messing up. i do like it pronounced correctly, but i myself can't pronounce all the other names right sometimes. like "tabitha", for example.

I don't think someone should change their name's pronunciation. Or even americanize their name. I knew a girl named Michael in school and I have heard of boys named Michel. I enjoyed the fact that they had unique names for their gender.

My husband's name is Mina (which sounds like a girl's name - Tina, Dina, Rena, etc. -and I have heard of a couple of other girls with the name). It is not common male name in the US. When I heard it, it threw me off for a second. But, I wouldn't want him to change it!

My name had to be changed, though. After coming to Egypt, Niki became Nicole. But, that wasn't for pronunciation facilitation, that was because my name means the F word in Arabic.

P.S. - One of my good friends is a Uri, but it is short for URIEL. Nice name Pedroh!!
