No one can pronounce my name correctly over here. My name is Sian, it's Welsh in origin and pronounced Sharn, as in rhymes with "darn"! Something to do with the American accent means that the 'h' sound combined with the very hard 'r' always makes it sound like Sean. In their heads they are pronouncing it like I am, but vocally it sounds like Sean.

I'm just going to change my name to Gladys and be done with it. :P

Gladys

How bout Ethel .... or Mabel :P

Separated!!

My husband's name is Mirko - it's Czech or something, but he is Peruvian, so in his country it's "MEER-ko" but in Spanish the k/g aren't as hard of a stop as in English - hard to explain. People always want to say "mer-ko" and he won't correct them..

my name is Athena and people here should be able to pronounce it but most americans are stupid soooo

People hardly ever pronounce Javier right. They always want to pronounce the J sound like a J instead of an H. I always have to spell his name for people. And sometimes they want to spell it Xavier. Which is a completely different name. I myself don't understand why it's so hard to say or spell. My name is easy to say and hardly ever gets mispronounced, just misspelled. It's Charity but people want to spell it Chairty. That's when they aren't calling me Chasity. A name, lovely as it is, that absolutely annoys the hell outta me. I hate when people call me that.

Just couldn't stay my @ss away!

My opinion is your name pronunciation should not change. My fiancee's son's name is Semion, already I've had some people say, "You're going to change it to Simon aren't you?" I reply, NO! His name is his name. Also, her daughter Yelena will remain Yelena and not Elena like I see some Russian immigrants do here.

I never understood why people feel it necessary to "Americanize" their given names. Be proud of your heritage and the name your parents gave you!

I think people should have enough respect to learn and properly pronounce someones name. They already murder the rest of the language; at least get peoples names right.

My SO's name is Svitlana which is Ukrainian and typically spelled Svetlana as Russian. She goes by Lana and everyone seems to get it right without any problem.

A question... she says her name is spelled Svitlana, her passport says Svitlana, I've made sure to ask about the spelling to make sure I have it right as Svitlana. Then she sends me a card last week and writes Svetlana on the return address...

My wife's name on her passport was spelled with an "i" and not an "e"... she hated it and changed the spelling to the Russian transliteration when we got married and filed AOS. I am not surprised she is doing this....

I don't feel it is necessary to americanize my given name. I like it the way it is and I wish everybody would call me like it is pronounced in Brazil. But it is very similar, it's not a huge difference, so oh well.

My real name is "Mycor" and supposed to be pronounced as MY (as in my) and COR (as in core) but some people here pronounce it as MI-COR. My husband and I have decided to use MAE, which is my nickname and introduce myself as Mae from then on. I love my real name because it's unique and one in ten million from the country where I've been but husband said we don't want to cause confusion to our friends so we'll stick to Mae.
