US Social Security Card & Drivers lisence

Hello. We got married in August. On Saturday (9/29), I received a letter for Biometric appointment. I have been here as a student for 5 years and I do have a social security card off my F-1visa. Since we got married, I know I have to apply for new social security card with my new name. On AOS application, I put my old social security number on there (since there was a line to put your maden name on the application as well).

Do I have to wait to get everything situated with Green card issue first before I apply for my new social security card? My drivers lisence is expiring and I need to renew it but I think I need social secuirty card to do so.

what did everybody else do with this stuation??

I'm not sure but can't you renew the F-1 visa with your new name on it and use that? If not you can apply for an EAD while you wait and with that you should be able to renew your drivers lisence. If none of what i said works you will have to wait for your green card to apply for a new SSN.

The first thing you should probably do is contact your local DMV and ask them.

One thing to be clear about, even if you get an SSN card with your married name the number isn't going to change.

To get an SSN card issued to you with F-1 status the eligibility requirements are pretty narrowly defined unless you have an EAD card.

Unless you can work with F-1 your status you are going to have to wait until you are issued an EAD card under your new status or wait until the AOS is complete and issued an I-551 stamp or card.

However, in the meantime you might be able to have the name corrected on your SSN record. That might be enough to get a driver's license in your married name, since most state licensing agencies check the name used on the driver's license application against the SSN record. Now if they need to see the actual SSN card you are SOL unless they will accept an SSN Verification Printout.

For the 102nd time DO NOT DO NOT give up your old SSN card until your are issued a new one!!! Tell the SSA office the dog ate it or it got washed in the laundry.

4. Correcting Numident Data When a Replacement Card Cannot Be Issued

If the alien does not provide evidence of work authorization or a valid

nonwork reason, explain that no replacement card can be issued.

Although a replacement card cannot be issued, the Numident can be

corrected if the alien has provided documentation supporting the change

(e.g., a name change).

If the alien provides documentation supporting the change, process the

SS-5 to update the Numident information but suppress the issuance of a

card. (suppress issuance of the card, and see RM 00202.320 for providing

SSN Verification Printouts.)

Only the marriage document (foreign or domestic) is needed to establish the married name if it meets the following criteria:

-- The new name can be derived from the marriage document, i.e. bride takes the groom's last name, groom takes

bride's last name, compound name (with or without hyphen) of each spouse's original name for either or both parties.

Note: State law must also allow the type of name change wishing to be made

-- The marriage occurred within the past two years

-- The marriage document shows sufficient identifying information, e.g., biographical data such as age, date of birth or

parent's names, and

-- The identifying information matches the information on his/her current Social Security number record.

The applicant will need to submit an identity document in the old name along with the marriage document if:

-- The marriage occurred within the last two years and has biographical information, e.g., age, date of birth or parent's

names which does not match our records, e.g., the SSN record.

-- The marriage occurred within the last two years, but does not show biographical information, or

-- The marriage occurred over two years ago (with or without biographical information.)

The identity document used to establish the old name must match the name on the current SSN record. The identity document is acceptable even if over two years old or expired.

-- ADOPTED CHILD: Parents may request that an adopted child be issued a

new SSN so that the adopting parent’s names may be listed on the

record. In this case the new SSN will not be cross-referenced with

the old number.
