SSN arrived!!

I checked the box on the DS-230 to get an SSN, but last tuesday it was two weeks since I'd entered, and nothing had arrived. I wanted to know if I was even in the system, so I went to the local office. They checked, and I wasn't in the system. So I filled out an application that day, and today, in the mail, was my card!! Well, I say "card" but really it's just a flimsy piece of heavy-paper. I was expecting an actual, plastic card like the Social Insurance Number cards are in Canada (Canadian version of the SSN).

But woohoo!!

And tomorrow I work!

I'm temping at an accounting company. It's just for a day, but hey -- a day's work is nothing to sneeze at! I could have had a position starting tomorrow that would go until April 21st, but turned it down as it was one hell of a commute (over an hour each way! In GOOD traffic!) and because they wanted me to work this Thursday too, and I can't, since I'm going to Canada that day.

Section 205© of the Social Security Act includes a provision that requires SSN cards to be made of banknote paper...

It will remain a paper card unless Congress changes the law. SSA did provide Congress with a report for a more secure SSN card back in 1997, but they never did anything with it. I think cost was the biggest reason.

I think those new cards would be a great idea!

Although I see your point on the cost -- if they were to do a photo on the card, it would have to be redone every few years, like a passport, and I could see people flipping out if they had to foot the bill themselves. Still, even a plastic card with no photo would seem a better option, and possibly cheaper in the long run, as it would be more difficult to destroy!

Quick question: Did it just come in the regular mail, or did you have to sign for it?

SSN cards come by first class mail and no signature is required.
