Green Card Name Change

We plan on changing my wife's name on her Soc Sec card to her married name. Social Security needs her green card for immigration status, but the green card has her maiden name on it too. Do we need to change the name to her married name on the green card before changing her Social Security? I checked USCIS and it seems one has to pay $370 to change the name on a green card (I90). Is that right? Maybe this is more trouble than its worth and we should leave things alone. What I don't understand is USCIS had the marriage certificate with the I485 application, but the name on the green card we received recently matches her passport which has her maiden name. Is this what USCIS normally does? Maybe we should wait until my wife becomes a US citizen and gets a US passport? I would think the green card should match the passport if one is traveling for Customs, and changing a name on a foreign passport is more trouble than its worth. The only ID my wife has now with her married name is a IL state ID. Anyway, I'm hoping that someone has experience with this. Thanks.

If your wife's GC arrived with her maiden name on it, then you must have filled out the I-485 application forms with her maiden name, instead of using her married name.

I have never changed my name on my passport and don't intend to until I apply for a new passport when my current one expires. I just carry a certified copy of my marriage certificate with me to show why my name changed.

SSA used our marriage cert long before we had green-card, and issued the SSN card in married name.

You can get the name changed on the green card by filing an I-90 and paying $290 for the pleasure. We filed the I-485 using married name, and got the GC in married name.

Thanks. I think we'll change the name on the SSN card and leave the green card alone. I looked at the I485 form and USCIS had her married name. The I485 was transferred to another state and was approved/issued in 2 weeks without an interview, so maybe it was an oversight. Since her passport and green card match, we plan on leaving that alone though. And we don't want to pay any more to USCIS than we have to.

If you filed for the AOS in her married name and they have issued the greencard in her maiden name then they have made a mistake and you can get the greencard fixed by following the instructions on the I-90 form.... there is no charge for getting a corrected greencard when the mistake was made by USCIS....

I second that.

A person can travel with Green card in married name and passport in maiden name, just book airline tickets in the maiden name, because airline officials compare the passport with the tickets, and wont let you board if they don't match.
