National Identification Number

My fiance' is filling out the DS-156 form. It's asking for the National Identification Number, but we're not sure if he has one or not. On my NOA2 above his name they've put a number starting with A and ending with 9 numbers, it looks like this: AXXX XXX XXX

Could that number be his National Identification Number?

The A number is his Alien Registration Number and will be needed for AOS.

National Identification Number is something many countries, such as Thailand, use. Each Thai National has an ID Card, with their National ID number on it. If your fiance doesn't know about a National ID number, chances are he does not have one, and you would fill that blank in with "NONE".

He's in the UK and has a National Insurance Number, but neither one of us are sure that's the same thing.

We had this discussion a few days ago in regards to Germany. Germans also have a Social Security number but it is only and exclusively used for social security claims not for identification purposes because it is too easy to steal (the system is logical for administration purposes). Every other number assigned, like on passport and other forms of ID, changes when you get a new document.

So, the question is would a British person use their National Insurance Number in any other context than the National Insurance system (e.g. when you open a bank account or apply for a driver's license)? If the answer is NO then there is no national ID-number and the answer on the form should be N/A.

My understanding is that in Canada that number is Social Insurance Number. Now you got me thinking that maybe it isn't

The UK has no national ID system ---- Yet!!

Put "None" in the box.

The so-called "A" number is your USCIS registration number. You will see that cropping up on several forms when you get to AOS stage. Just keep it safe for the time being.
