A few years ago, I was offered a position in Beaumont, TX. The company: Conn's Appliances, which operates 60 stores in 2 states, yet has been planning an aggressive expansion. This plan has yet to be seen.

Me thinks this is the only “big” company there.

Beaumont is a one horse town, with a huge low income population and significantly higher than national average crime. However, if the pay is good, the housing for the "privileged" is quite good.

A solid 3 hours from Houston, cost of living is reasonable and is located on prime hurricane alley. Overall rating from 1-10, a 6.

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

I have worked there, only have an opinion from that perspective. Have stayed for weeks at the time.Due to many chemical and petroleum refineries it smells very bad. You can tell by the smell, that Baumont, Port Arthur is near. I have never gotten where the smell was not offensive. Not wanting to offend fellow Texans, only my opinion... john & jean

Thanks for the insight all!

I have peeked at realtor.com and the prices are lower than they would be here. Of course that makes me think, is it just "the way it is" or is there a reason for it.

The plus side to this opportunity is its a logical next step in my husband's career, and he would not have to travel he has now (usually gone 2-3 weeks a month). Its also very stable market in that its with a utility.

Hurricanes/tornados - well, its something to be concerned about. Nightlife, not so much. At times here in Tampa I wish people would stay IN sometimes, anytime. Everywhere is packed all the time. It gets annoying. That said - of course I am spoiled and I want a Borders/Barnes&Noble on every corner, and DD. Soooo I want all the amenities with less traffic :D

Just am curious about the town, and you guys have given me some things to consider. Anything else you think of, would be greatly apreciated! ty ty!

My wife grew up in Beaumont. It is a small town not much of a night life. She said she would never want to live there again. And it isn't 3 hours from houston more like an hour and 45 min. She said they called it Boremont.

With current traffic conditions and construction, count on 2.5-3 hours. This may improve over time.

Anecdotal evidence is just that, anecdotal.

My anecdotal insight is recent. If given the choice to live in Beaumont TX and I have, we chose not. Thus, we live in Kansas City, Missouri. KCMO Rocks!!!

This comes from someone who has lived in Houston TX, DC, upstate NY, Tokyo Japan, Rome Italy and Jakarta Indonesia.
