Quitting smoking was one of the hardest things that I had to do. When I went to my doctor after my divorce and told her that I needed to quit. She said "Dear, now is not a good time to quit. When you go through any kind of stress, it's twice as hard to quit". I couldn't believe that she was encouraging me to keep smoking. The first thing that you need is the "want to" - and if you "want to" it's much easier. I was a smoker for 20 years and I quit with the patch and then the Doctor finally gave me medication. I guess the same medication that helps depression, also helps you quit smoking. It worked for me. I also used Twizzlers - bit both ends off and took deep breaths to get the deep breathing "fix". Good Luck and I am behind you all the way!!!!!! Keep the support from friends and family as well and tell as many people as you can - that also makes you more determined to quit. AND - you'll feel so much better and you will be able to taste and smell much better within a couple of day. There are so many more reasons to quit than to keep wasting your money and deteriorating your health. Again - GOOD LUCK!

Good luck Lisa!

I quit "for reals" 8 months ago. After quitting and starting and quitting and starting repeatedly for about 2 years. I tried the patch and the gum, and finally just threw them out and refused to buy any more. I drank a lot of water, changed my morning and evening routines (I didn't ever smoke during the day because I teach and couldn't) and avoided alcohol for a few weeks. After about a month the cravings had slowed. Every once in a while I still get a little twinge, but the thought of actually smoking makes me nauseated.

If anything, getting "baby ready," not wasting $5 a pack, and smelling like, well, not a$$ is worth it :)

Thanks everyone....now I only have one tab left...arrrrrrrrrrgh!

Gary...I'm the I-dont-take-meds-unless-I'm-going-to-die type. Seems strange that I have such a 'healthy' mindset like drug free, vitamins, exercise, etc...yet I smoke. It's just messed up really!

I just have to keep telling myself I can do it, and face it like a challenge cos I'm highly competitive, so hopefully that will do it for me.

Oh, and I'm doing this while dieting  So I'm gonna be one of the few to quit smoking AND lose weight.

Oh jeez what am I doing?!?!
