So my husband wants to put me down as a non-resident alien spouse since I was not a resident in 2005...does he need to include my income? I mean, I don't think he should since I was not a resident, so why should I have to claim what I made in Canada (all I "made" was a bursary from the Canadian government that was for University)?

The other issue is, I don't have my SSN yet...I applied last Tuesday, and taxes are due April 18th (MA). I can't get a tax id number becase apparently those are only for people who can't get SSNs, and since my application is in the system, I clearly am able to get one. So what do we do? Any advice?

I believe one can always get request an extension on taxes!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Phew! We checked, and it looks like we claim it, but it's not taxable, since it was a scholarship for tuition, and not actual "income". THANK GOD! :)

So the tax forms have been sent out! Woohoo! Now to do my Canadian ones! :P:dance:

Go to the IRS or ring them and get a form called the W7 this will allow you to get a ITN number which doubles as a number for taxes.(you cant use this for work though) if you want to file for a joint return.. This is what we did downside is that you have to wait like 12 weeks for the return as it takes 6 weeks for each proccess to occur. But you can file a joint return with your partner.

I've reached that realistic age where I have to choose between having fun and a heart attack :)

Thanks! :)

It's all good, though -- SSN arrived early last week, and we sent off the tax forms on Thursday. :)
