Alright then I'm engaged to a criminal. Better not have any kids, because when I think of criminal I certainly don't think of suitable father. And I guess I shouldn't rely on him to support the family when he gets here because after all he's a criminal who can't stop committing criminal acts-he may end up in jail or deadbeat. LUDICROUS.

It's quite ludicrous suggesting that your fiance may end up in jail. Like he hasn't been there already. He did jail time, no? Did he do that time for being law abiding? Or did he do that time for breaking the law?

We are not criminals.

Yes you are. You violated the law when you crossed the border. You violated the law when you remained in this country. You violated the law when you obtained a job in this country. You continue to violate the law every day you are here. What is a criminal if not someone who violates the law? Deal with it ... you're criminals.

Sorry, but no thumbs up from me on that one.

so what is the correct term then for someone who continuously commits criminal acts?

You call it whatever you want-but Javier's not a criminal. He has no criminal mind or mindset. When I talk to him he always tells me you never think of it as illegal what you're doing when you come over. It's not like, oh I'm going to go out and break the law today.

there are lots of criminals that do not think twice about their illegal acts. It's a way of life for them, whether it's stealing or whatnot.

You need to call a spade a spade... he broke the law. breaking the law makes him a criminal. not saying it's bad or good because with that standpoint you could call someone who runs a red light a criminal. It's semantics. But you need to own up to what you've done. He broke the law = he's a criminal.

MissLiss,

Give yourself some time off. Given your case history, there is just no reasonable way this subject can be discussed on VJ in a manner that doesn't upset you.

I agree...

And just for a further point...is it possible for one to no longer be a criminal...yes, sure...when the offense has been paid for. Maybe that's all semantics too...but that's MY opinion. Did Javier commit a criminal act...yes....is he currently a criminal...no. Is he likely to commit a criminal act in the future...I'd think unlikely. He's been there, done that...has the scars to show for it. SO all the "Better not have any kids, because when I think of criminal I certainly don't think of suitable father. And I guess I shouldn't rely on him to support the family when he gets here because after all he's a criminal who can't stop committing criminal acts" blah, blah....is just that....Blah, blah. I haven't heard one person on here say ohh, he's bad news. For crying out loud!

Illegal does not equal “criminal” – check the dictionary.

I gave you the dictionary definition above... but here...how's this also...

Section 1325 of Title 8 of the United States Code, subdivision (a), states as follows:

Any alien who (1) enters or attempts to enter the United States at any time or place other than as designated by immigration officers, or (2) eludes examination or inspection by immigration officers, or (3) attempts to enter or obtains entry to the United States by a willfully false or misleading representation or the willful concealment of a material fact, shall, for the first commission of any such offense, be fined under title 18 or imprisoned not more than 6 months, or both, and, for a subsequent commission of any such offense, be fined under title 18, or imprisoned not more than 2 years, or both.

Imprisonment is not a consequence of a civil offense. Entering the country illegally, even the first time, is a crime.

I'm surprised at the overall anti-(illegal)-immigrant sentiment here. Don't forget that anti-illegal-immigrant is pretty close in most people's mind to anti-immigrant in general. I don't think that being an illegal immigrant is a picnic. I was hoping to see more compassion on this board.

Why, exactly? Illegal immigrants create the stigma that will follow ALL of our loved ones. Illegal immigrants have no respect for the laws of this country...which is the EXACT OPPOSITE our loved ones. Our loved ones are putting their lives & happiness on hold to 'do the right thing' and be respectful of the laws here...illegals obviously don't care about that. They do what they want & to hell with consequences.

Not to mention the ABSOLUTE CHEEK of illegals that not only is breaking the immigration law not good enough....now they are DEMANDING rights? omG!

Honestly, why you'd think there'd be sympathy for illegals HERE of all places...where we ALL are living f*cked up lives so we DO THINGS THE RIGHT WAY. where we have to go through sleepless nights of worry and lonliness...worrying about affadavit of support & all the COUNTLESS questions it brings up....how we all worry about poe and temp work permits...worrying about when they'll get their ss#s so they can contribute to the household....etc. I could list scenario after scenario which can illustrate how we all FOLLOW THE LAW TO DO THINGS THE RIGHT WAY, when in direct contrast, these people have no respect whatsoever about the law & now are demanding the same rights as citizens & legal immigrants? GIMME A BREAK.

They stand for the exact opposite of what we're all here for. Why we'd be sympathetic for that is anyone's guess.

Seriously, don't even really get me started on this cos it makes me so f'ing angry...

Add to that the tax evasion and/or ID theft that goes along with illegally taking up employment in the US and you got yourself a pretty good record of felonies.
