Today is the 50th anniversary of the desegregation of Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, and the photo to the left is an iconic representation of that important event in American history: Black student Elizabeth Eckford heads into the school surrounded by a taunting and angry crows, as behind her a white classmate hisses at her, face contorted in the ugliness of racial hatred. That girl was Hazel Bryan Massery -- and 40 years later, she and Eckford were reuinted for a photo, and became, surprisingly, great friends, beginning a relationship sprung from their intertwined roots in that larger story which still marks it with angst and raw feelings on both sides. Vanity Fair's David Margolick chronicles this and other events springing from that day 50 years ago in "Through a Lens, Darkly" -- an 11,000 word opus tracing what happened to Eckford and the rest of the Nine after that day:

sad times....

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

Sadder still what happened to the community after that....

Central High School in Little Rock is now 100% Black in a black community which is now a dangerous slum. In 1957 it was a all White lower middle class neighborhood.

So this social experiment didnt work out as planned. The white simply moved out leaving the once well kept neighborhood to its fate.

I agree this is a significant event in our history. I wish either the journalist who wrote this story or the proof reader responsible for editing it (if such people still exist) would pay enough attention to what they write to get the spelling right.

It makes me think that even the "wonderful" editors these organizations employ don't pay attention to what they are publishing.

(The Huffington Post is just a famous blog and Rachel Sklar is kind of...eh. So hold your horses on the "these organizations" criticism there.)

My comment was, in no way, intended to be a political statement.

When I referred to organizations I was using the definition I learned in (approximately) the 3rd grade. If you're not familiar with it you could check out an online definition. To save you some effort I am providing the one found in wikipedia:

An organization (or organisation — see spelling differences) is a social arrangement which pursues collective goals, which controls its own performance, and which has a boundary separating it from its environment. The word itself is derived from the Greek word ὄργανον (organon) meaning tool. The term is used in both daily and scientific English in multiple ways.

If your objection was to the word "these" feel free to change it to "many." I would suspect carelessness applies to all sides of the political spectrum.

I'm not interested in politics. What I wrote was a comment, not a criticism.
