Bollywood star jailed for poaching

NEW DELHI, India (AP) -- Bollywood star Salman Khan has been found guilty of poaching a rare buck in a desert wildlife preserve and sentenced to five years in prison, his lawyer said.

Under Indian wildlife preservation laws, any sentence over three years means the convicted person will be taken into custody immediately after sentencing.

A court in the western city of Jodhpur on Monday sentenced Khan to five years and an accomplice to one year for shooting a rare chinkara deer in 1998.

Television footage showed Khan being bundled by baton-wielding police officers into a white police van waiting outside the courthouse to take him to the local prison.

A reporter with the NDTV news channel described Khan as looking "shaken and a little dazed" when the sentence was read.

"We will appeal," his lawyer Hastimal Saraswat told reporters outside the court. "He is not guilty, he is innocent," he said.

Khan was also fined 25,000 rupees (US$560), the Press Trust of India news agency reported.

In February, another court sentenced Khan to a year in prison on a separate charge of poaching deer and buck. He has appealed that sentence.

Khan has faced several separate charges of poaching and illegal possession of weapons stemming from the incident, when he and several other people allegedly drove into the Thar desert to shoot deer while on a break from filming.

Khan has denied the charges.

Members of the local Bishnoi tribe, who worship the black buck, first alerted forest officials to the killings, and police have said that nearly 80 people have given statements against the film star.

Khan has been a heartthrob in scores of Hindi-language films for his portrayal of macho yet romantic characters who fight for love.

Khan is also on trial in a separate case in Bombay for a traffic accident that killed a man in 2002. Three people were injured and one killed when Khan allegedly hit a group of people sleeping on a Bombay sidewalk.

Salman Khan has gotten away with way too much over the years.

I agree

Unfortunately I'm sure he'll get out of serving the sentence somehow.

I've also never understood why people like him so much. A couple movies I saw with him in it, his acting was crappy and I don't get the whole "heart throb" thing at all. ?

Now the ####### is praying. I bet he's never prayed in his life until now.

JODHPUR: Languishing in Central Jail in Jodhpur after hunting a protected animal, Bollywood star Salman Khan on Wednesday turned to God offering prayers in his cell for his early release and his brother Sohail and sister Alivera paying obeisance at dargah of sufi saint Moinuddin Chishti in Ajmer.

After a court deferred hearing on Khan's plea for bail till Thursday, Sohail and Alivera, travelled from here to Ajmer where they offered 'Chadar' at the dargah for Salman seeking his early release from jail.

Jail sources said the actor offered namaz inside the cell.

More details....

Khan was fed plain flat bread, vegetable curry and given an earthenware jar of water, like all the other prisoners, Chauhan said.

He was not even allowed to phone his mother Salma, who collapsed and was hospitalized after the verdict, Chauhan said. "We did not allow him (to call), not as a humane service, not as a VIP. Mobiles (phones) are not permitted," he said.

My wife says that in Thailand men will become monks for several months (time based on how bad you were) to make up for a bad deed. Like embezzlement etc.....

Among many Hindus in India, there is a belief that if you do a certain religious ceremony where you offer a certain amount of gifts to God from time to time, your sins get forgiven.

Not coincidentally, this belief is held in the most corrupt Hindu communities in the country. The most pious and the most corrupt.

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.

  • 1 year later...

The spelling is GANDHI. You might be confusing the old man with the "Gandhis" who are ruling India since independence except for a few years in between. And the resemblence ends with the name.
