Is there really a big difference between the two? I'm asking because in this forum, quite a few May CSC k1 filers have gotten approved already, but really no k3s. Is it just because we don't have that many k3 filers here that we see such a difference, or is k1 really like a month faster?

I'm just curious about what you guys might know

May 31 2007 I-130 - NOA1, pending at California Service Center

October 31 2007 APPROVED

June 13 2007 I-129 - NOA1, pending at California Service Center

Well the I-129F petitions for a K-3 are also filed subsequently to an underlying I-130 application and are not processed identically. Prior to July 30th I-129F's for a K-3 were sent to the NBC (and possibly forwarded elsewhere by the USCIS) while the I-129F's for a K-1 were processed by one of four Service Centers. In all likelyhood as you said there is going to be a difference in processing times due to the different locations the petitions were filed to and I would not really worry too much :).

There, I updated my timeline. My estimate is that I'll be approved sometime between late October and late November.

I guess the k1s really are faster because they're a different process

When I analyzed this a few months ago, K1 was at least a month or two faster than K3 from the NOA1 date. Hard to say what the difference is now though because the process is constantly changing.

Wife's visa journey:

03/19/07: Initial mailing of I-129F.

07/07/11: U.S. Citizenship approved and Oath Ceremony!

MIL's visa journey:

07/26/11: Initial mailing of I-130.

05/22/12: Interview passed!

YMMV
