No they will not. I am in the same boat with my wife. Her license expired on her b-day in June.

We took the 1 year extension letter in to the DMV and they turned it down.

If you do get your license with this letter please let us know. Now you have me wondering.....

It all depends on the state and in most cases on how the individual driving instructor interprets the guidelines.

In my case (Oklahoma) there was no mention of the I751 NOA1 to be accepted as proof of legal residence to get a driving license.

I was lucky though that my driving instructor made phone calls and lucky for us decided to mark the NOA1 equivalent as an I551 stamp.

Thus I got my license renewed for one year.

My advise would be to go ahead and try with the NOA1. If it doesn't work, I would get the I551 stamp in the passport and try again. In most states the I551 stamp is stated as a valid proof for legal residence for DL purposes.

Good luck!

I just got off the phone with the DMV (or DDS as they call themselves now). The operator said nix (no you can not use your 1 year extension paper to get your license renewed. She said the only way to renew your license with an expired 2 year green card is to have a sticker on the green card that is placed there by the USCIS.

I did learn however that you have a 2 year grace period between an expired license and renewing it before you run into any trouble concerning retaking the driving test, fees, etc.

So, even though you are legal to be in the US, you will be illegal when driving. Really F***ed up huh?

Interesting. Florida refers to I-797s, which you think would encompass the NOA1 extension, but they specify only certain I-797s:

1. Alien Registration receipt card, (Green card, Form I-551); or

2. I-551 stamp in passport or on I-94; or

3. Immigration Judges Order, with the customer's A-number, granting asylum; or

4. I-797, with the customer's A-number, stating the customer has been granted asylum; or

5. I-797 or another form from the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services, with the customer's A-number, stating the customer's application for Refugee status is approved.

Thanks for looking this up. However, it is a whole different ball game for renewing a license vs. issuing a new license.

sorry, but it is not. You have to show the same IDs and evidence of legal residence on renewal as when you first get your license. It actually says it in the paragraph I have copied above - read the last two sentences!

Will GA DMV accept one year extention letter for renewal of license????

I'm in a similar situation. I live in GA. My GA Driver's Licence expires in NOV. 30, like my GC.

I find it strange to hear that DMV in GA don't accept the one year extension letter.

I mailed my I751 on september 6 to TSC, till today I have not heard anything from them. no NOA, check not yet catched. but the tracking number of the mail package I sent showed: Delivered, September 10, 2007, 5:56 am, MESQUITE, TX 75185.

when I look at the time: 5:56am, dose TSC office open that early? How can I verify that they actually did receive my package?

BTW is that Eastern time, like in GA or Central Time, like in TX?

Thanks for replying

She was accepted simply beacuse her 2 year green card had not yet expired. My wife could have done the same thing as well but we fell for the "mail in your renewal" form instead of just going there. Cost us 3 weeks before they mailed her back saying her green card had expired....yada..yada...yada.

To be perfectly honest with you....it's not worth making an info-pass appointment in Atlanta. Takes too damn long to drive down there, hike 1/2 mile to the building from the p-lot, stand in line and hope not to get mugged, then have the security guards search you, your spouse, ask questions as to why your leg sets off the metal detector after you explain to them you have surgical implants from a broken leg, etc.
