for K1 ,would it be possible to get married first then apply for the SSN afterwards?

or does it really have to be get SSN first then get married then update your SSN?

You can probably get married first. In Texas, the K1 visa holder only needs a passport in order to marry. I've read that the same is true in Florida.

Get married first, then apply for the SSN... So it is depend on each state that where your wife apply..

Because some states wont allow to apply SSN until she gets work permit or green card already...or you are in the process of AOS ...

Most states have the same rule when it comes to SS. It's a national card not a state thing.

The law says that you can apply for SS card with a K1 visa but you have to do so within a certain amount of time. I know that some people who went there more than 70 days after arrival where refused and told to wait until EAD or GC.

Whether to do it before or after marriage is up to you and up to the law of the State (some require SSN for the marriage license with no possible affidavit).

I've read several things saying that most of the time the Social Security refuses to put the married name on the card even if you file after stating for excuse that they you can't have a name different than the one stated on your K1 (go figure). So I guess you might as well do it before.

I have heard of a number of VJers here having problems getting their SSN after they got married - for a variety of reasons. Why not get it done now and out of the way - it will make things easier for driver's licenses, bank accounts, etc. Your name just needs to be in the system and that generally happens in about 10 days to 2 weeks, so unless you are planning to get married before 10 days, apply for the SSN first. Then, if there is a name change involved, go back and get it changed afterwards. It may mean a little more work, however, you know you aren't going to be denied until you have an EAD or a greencard.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

Once the I-94 expires you have wait to receive something from the USCIS, like your EAD, before applying.

That is completely wrong. SSA is a federal government agency. You know - FEDERAL - as in they have jursidiction in all 50 states?

Seriously, if you're going to guess at the answer to a question, just don't answer at all.
