Things that you don't miss (anymore) back in your country

Great idea for a thread.

What I DON'T miss about North-West England

- "Alright?" being the common Greeting

- Going around 4-6 round abouts to get even near the center of a town nevermind the city center

- Smoky transport stops and waiting areas

- NHS. So you have to *work* at it to get medical care in the US at least when you get it it's excellent. Just my opinion...

- Small cinema screens

- Living right next to a farm haha..sure don't miss that muck spreading.

- Paying outragious prices for a small portion of food at a restersaunt

- Flooding

- Duvets

- Orange or Blackcurrant being your standard soft drinks

- Having the front room cleared out every 2 months for the chimney sweep guy to come fix it.

- Criss cross double glazing on windows

- Ice on the roads/pavements

Thats all I can think of for now.

The only thing I don't miss in my home country is our garbage "politics" and "politicians" everything else I miss it even the traffic since I am now living in the country where there are more trees than human......

I don't miss having to pay $60+ round trip to get on and off my Island with my car, more if I have someone with me (Victoria)

I don't miss the metric system

I don't miss 65-75 summers, too cool for me. I like em HOT.

I don't miss the beggars ever 50 feet

My hubby doesn't miss the 22% VAT! He doesn't miss the financial struggles, comparing what you earn to what everything costs.

I haven't moved yet but I think I have a very good idea about the things that I WON'T miss!!

* My job. I have only stayed here because of this visa process and I cannot WAIT to leave and never come back!

* The rain (I know it rains in America, lol.. But there cannot be anywhere on earth that rains as much as it does here )

* Talking to Chris on the phone. It will be such a treat to be able to actually talk to him face to face each day!!

* Obsessing about the USCIS website.

* 17.5% VAT

* Crappy bus/train service from Cornwall (It takes me 3 hours to get somewhere that would take 30 minutes in a car)

* Living where I work and being on call 24/7

* Seagulls (Where I live they are as big as cats Not joking either, lol. They are really vicious (sp) too)

I'm sure I can think of lots more... They are just the main ones

I won't miss:

the never ending traffic in London - constant and depressing

"Willesden / Neasden" - particularly cr*p areas in London

the long slog to work every morning on the Central Line (utter rubbish)

kids in hoodies

Natwest Bank queues during the lunchtime rush hour

gas prices

NHS - hooray for healthcare in the US

house prices

Asda prepared meals - they are awful - go to M&S

the sheer number of people in London

the government and its ability to hand out cash willingly to those abusing the system

My wife doesn't live here yet, but I know she won't miss:

1) having to worry about getting mugged every time she leaves her apartment building, and

2) some of her friends who have stopped including her because they're jealous that she's moving to the US and they're not

- The higher taxes

- Not being able to vote on most things (although I can't vote yet, it's still nice to know that when I'm a USC I'll have more of a say on various local stuff they want to pass, as well as elected officials like DA's, Sheriff's etc).

- The anti-social "yoofs" always hanging outside the local shops, harassing people and being obnoxious (the closest I've come to that so far in the US was last night at the gas station - there was a drunk loitering outside, but he just said "You having a good night?", to which I replied in the affirmative, and he just said "Good to hear that sir!", and went back to loitering).

- Being able to purchase self defense items, and train in their use (starting my CCW classes amongst others).

- Small roads and less parking

- The lack of customer service

I'm still in my country, but I just got back after 8 months in the U.S.

I know I won't miss:

- the job market (completely agree with the French guy/girl-sorry, forgot the nickname- about studying a lot and being impossibile to find a job!)

- the traffic, pollution and huge parking problem in Rome

- how italians treat other italians

- the soccer madness

- the totally uncapable government

- 20% VAT!!!

I'll definetely miss (that's an easy one):

-food! food! food!

-italian wonderful art cities and landscapes

Things I won't miss when I finally move to the US?

1. Not being able to vote for a head of government and head of state

2. The Metric System

3. Terrible fast food choices

4. Nothing open 24 hours

5. Living in the land of no freeways

6. Outrageous income taxes, sales taxes, and socialism in general

7. Government run health care

8. Uncompetitive home loans

9. Government run auto insurance

10. Radio stations that think a four-hour show on preseason hockey training camp is more important than September baseball

11. Watching the NFL playoffs and Super Bowl and having repetitive Canadian commercials spliced in

12. Generally egregious prices for everything.

13. Gas prices

14. People not knowing what an IRA, 401(k), or CD are

15. The entitlement mentality

16. Having to wait until my next foray over the border to buy something substantial

17. $1 and $2 coins

18. Perpetual rain that makes October-to-March feel like a gargantuan slog

19. The magnitude of ridiculous airfare taxes, fees, etc. that must be paid to get a ticket here

20. Paying outlandish shipping fees when I send things and bogus brokerage fees when I receive things
