Only 19 days until I'm home. woohoo!

So I'm reading up on the next steps: applying for SSN and marriage license.

Justin and I will live in Austin, Travis County. From what I'm reading, you need an SSN to apply for a marriage license.

Travis County Clerk

Marriage Licenses

What You Need to Bring to:

County Clerk (map)

5501 Airport Blvd

Austin, Texas

Office Hours: 8:00 am to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday.

1. $41.00 in cash. Sorry, no checks!

2. Identification. Both bride and groom must bring identification. Accepted forms of identification include

a certified copy of the applicant's birth certificate; or

a certificate, license, or document issued by this state, another state, the United States, or a foreign government.

3. Social Security Number. You need not bring your social security card, but you must know the number.

1) What is the fastest way to get your SSN? Is it really necessary to wait 2 weeks after my arrival, as stated in the SSN guide?

2) I’ll be bringing my translated birth certificate, passport with K1 visa, and I-94. Will this be enough to apply for SSN?

Thanks!

Saludos,

Caro

Even though they say you need your social security number, you can most likely get the marriage license without it. You will need to explain to them why you do not have it and that it will take some time to get it. I know others have been able to get the marrige license without it.

Still you should apply for the SSN after a few weeks. If you are entered into the system when you apply, you could have your number in a week.

Thanks Mags and Neonred!

I'm doing the math in my head, 2 weeks before applying for SSN. 2 more weeks to get the card. (1-2 weeks to get married?). Then 3-4 months for EAD...

I'm going to go crazy without work for so long...volunteer work, here I come

keep them coming! :)

(Specially if you are in Austin!)

You do not need a social security number to get married. Use the alien registation number. That is what the marriage license says.

Nicky Salmon ~ Do you have first hand experience of obtaining a marriage license in Texas?

Thanks Nicky Salmon and Iquit! :)

If an SSN is not needed for the marriage license, that would be nice because it would save us a few weeks...which always helps.

If this is correct, then we could apply for the marriage license, get married, file for AOS, and file for SSN afterwards, already using my married name?
