Nudity only became a problem after man and woman first put on cloths. Which was done because of winter protection. Not because of shame of nudity.

It is strange that Man is the only animal on this planet that attempts to legislate MORALITY!!

I agree, people are way to caught in in the dangers of naked flesh.

Nudity is only shameful because of the values we have chosen to place upon it!

Hmmm...I think Americans are far too preoccupied with the dangers of 'naked flesh'...from an early age my parents took me to beaches in France, Spain, Italy where the sight of a pair of boobs or bum wasn't considered an affront. I agree it does come down to individual comfort....and if some families are more comfortable with nudity than others....doesn't make them perverts.

I would rather my children be comfortable with nudity in the home than guns. JMO.

In Finland it's normal for kids to see their parents naked because of our bathing and swimming traditions. We tend to go into mixed gender saunas nude with a temperature between 170F and 210F (and we do throw water on the stones so it gets even hotter in there, American saunas are for wussies). Before I turned around 10 I saw my parents, my siblings, my aunts and grannies, and some other folks like neighbours, preachers and parents' colleges nude. After turning around 10 I just saw people of my own age nude pretty constantly (and I actually still do almost every month since I still live in Finland) and occasionally some older folk like my friends' parents or so.

Finnish swimming-baths tend to be split into male and female areas and in there it's not allowed to enter the sauna unless you're naked. Furthermore many of these swimming areas have mix gender (extra) smoke saunas or Turkish saunas and many swimming areas don't mandate a swimsuit (it's only optional) so thus you see people naked of your own gender all the time and rather often you see people naked of the opposite gender too, as long as you participate into any of these event's (it's actually rather hard not to participate in any of them, since around a third of all Finnish parties have a sauna and most of the time it's a mixed gender one). I don't think that this has done any damage to anyone.

Ouh, and in case this was unclear: no, it's not uncommon for adult males to go into saunas naked together with teenaged girls. It's considered normal. Think of it as temporary nudism, it has nothing to do with sex.

In the US my wife lives together with some seven other people and she has to constantly remind me to not walk around places with only my panties on and not to walk naked from and to the shower. Oh well, old habits die hard - I guess this one has too, or other vice they will never grant me citizenship .

I say, if you're comfortable bein' naked, hang up your clothes instead Yes, there is a time and place for everything, but the bigger deal you make out of it, the more self concious kids are going to be about it, which can lead to all kinds of other unhealthy hang ups.

From what I've read and heard, it's not just Americans, but North Americans in general, that have a hangup about sex -- this includes Canadians.

Perhaps Canadian television is a little more "liberal" in what they show and don't show when compared to the U.S., but the general and overall attitudes regarding sex in North America are far more reserved than that of in Europe or Asia. Whether or not that's a "good thing" really depends on your point-of-view, I suppose.

Some might say that younger individuals have no need to be exposed to sexual content and nudity. For the most part, I'd agree with that; however, sex and nudity do not always go hand-in-hand. A physical examination by a physician may involve partial or total nudity (depending on the exam) and unless you either know the physician incredibly well or something goes very wrong, there's no sexual component there at all. So that's one example among many where you could be nude without necessitating sex.

If I didn't know any better, I'd almost think that the (legal) sex industry (which includes porn, strip clubs, sex toys, fetishism, etc) is attempting to keep North America's value system, when related to "sex and nudity," to a fairly conservative stance. I know that sounds quite odd, but if you think about it for a moment, it does make sense. If sex remains a "taboo" subject, then people will want more of it. People always want what they can't have, right? So that in turn means the sex industry would thrive, because people would turn to it as an "escape." If (and when) our attitudes and values eventually relax on "sex and nudity," people might not care quite so much about what the sex industry has to offer them. In that scenario, the sex industry loses money and for any business, that's a huge no-no!

But maybe all of that is just one giant conspiracy theory. I can't be sure, since there's no concrete way to prove (or disprove) anything I said.

A throwback to puritanical days maybe? It seems to me (this is ONLY my opinion - not gospel truth) that the only ones who've made a huge deal out of this are conservative christians, whose roots (IMHO) originated from the Puritans. Then again, with all the pervs in this world maybe that could be part of the reason...parental nudity=something evil going on at home. Yeah.
