Banning Trolls at VJ

Heres a thought, and i know...its well common sense and well, oh geez hard to realize but, if you dont feed the troll the troll will not post anymore. ignore the troll, dont talk to the troll, dont reply in threads made by the troll. the more you give them what they want, the worse they get.

begging for a ban, after the mods CLEARLY state what they do and dont do is pointless

Don't feed trolls is a basic fact of internet forums, however the sheer number of users at times makes it impossible for everyone to not chime in. Also, the 'best,' trolls are the ones who know how to push buttons and make people feel they need to have their say.

This is why just about every well moderated forum I have been in have banned accounts permanently, listed IP addresses, and made it clear that trolling boards, especially on topic boards will result in a ban.

Here? Well, I never 'begged,' for a ban. I wanted a clarification on the policies and views of trolls on VJ and learned that long time members have multiple troll accounts and they have not been banned in the past. I really didn't think known and tolerated trolling on a board like this was ok for some people.

If that is the case I'm just going to alert people of this fact, call out clearly ID'd troll accounts like "Charlie Brown," to post on their main account, and worst case, I'll just ignore this board, use the FAQ if necessary and move to a China specific board like candleforlove.com

I agree! When a obvious troll infiltrates VJ, it's holly hell because everyone gets up in arms about some non-sense that is written. It's very entertaining. We need at least one troll thread and post per week...

I admit i get out of hand sometimes enough to kick myself kicked fof for a week or so doesnt mean im a troll just we all have bad days lol no one is perfect.

Too bad "banning" here actually means "Time Out".... I'd prefer that people were actually banned. IP banned. Especially for posts about timelines.

well then its simple, if you cant resist chiming in, then dont complain about the trolls. chiming in makes them happy and they come back for more.

the mods do the best they can, there are only 4 (3 right now) of them. and they cants stay awake 24/7 to ban trolls. also if you have a troll from another country, you can ban the IP, but if hes in an internet cafe, good luck getting ride of him. there are plenty other internet cafes he can go to, start a new acct and troll again.

Problem is, some people (depending on their ISP and their country) use numerous IPs, and other people also use those IPs. Blocking IPs can result in innocent people being banned. And those who know how to do it can get themselves another IP anyway.

I'm just going to clarify something. The mods do not have access to any personal information regarding members here. We can't see IPs and we cannot disable accounts. We ask for clarification if our "radars" go off about something, that is all.

That's too bad that you don't have access to that information. But we appreciate your work.

With access to account information, there are numerous ways to tell if accounts belong to the same member. IP is just one of them.

I'd like to see such a rule with exceptions made for those who want a new account just to discuss a personal matter. Those accounts could be pre-approved and have the same username prefix or be in their own member group or something like that.

That's why I think there should be a group for Trolls. If a moderator *suspects* that

someone is a Troll, they should move them to "Trolls" - until and unless they can prove

the moderators wrong (i.e. guilty until proven innocent.)

That's a horrible idea... I suspect that Mister Fancypants and Mawilson are trolls... So I'm just arbitrarily labeling you both as "suspected trolls" until proven innocent... Alrighty then... Keep in mind that some folks are just jerks and not trolls. Including yours trully. Hmmm!!!

Having more than one account is against TOS...but mostly a blind is turned. Apart from my other account of course
