I've been looking at so many medical insurance plans over the last few weeks and really I don't like any of them! Most of all I want to be covered for catastrophies, but also we are planning to have children, so I'm also looking for a plan that can keep having a child from being too expensive. Is there any insurance that can limit all costs in a year to maybe 5,000-10,000 but doesn't cost an arm and a leg?!

Wife's visa journey:

03/19/07: Initial mailing of I-129F.

07/07/11: U.S. Citizenship approved and Oath Ceremony!

MIL's visa journey:

07/26/11: Initial mailing of I-130.

05/22/12: Interview passed!

Average insurance cost for a family is in the 10,000-12,000 range. The only way you will get it cheaper is get a plan with an HSA and a huge deductible. HSA contributions are tax deductible. But you can only contribute up to your deductible limit each year.

Have you looked at aetna? Are you self employed?

I know I have looked at them but don't remember the specifics. I am self employed which I think is part of the problem in finding a decent insurance. It's also disappointing to us that most of these insurances have a 12 month waiting period before maternity benefits will apply.

Also...many of the big insurance companies said they would not cover my wife until she had been a resident in the USA for 6 months to a year. Then I was advised by someone else not to volunteer this information. But if I don't volunteer this information, we enroll in a plan, and God forbid something happens, will they refuse to pay?

Hey Lviv, speaking from experience, check out INBOUND insurance, do web search it is for new immigrants into USA that are non residents with very affordable rates. Also check out Assurant health insurance website, they have very low rates for self employed like you. Let me know if you need help finding these I will send you webpages, I just forgot them off top of my head right now.

You have a very good question.
