Ah, if only we could be in everyone else's shoes, then we would really know why they make the decisions that seem incomprehsible.

As we can't, isn't it better not to make any judgment? After all, what business is it of mine...unless of course someone else's relationship has some profound negative impact on those around them.

Apart from the obvious 'visa fraud', I can't imagine what that might be though.

I often wonder how people who need a translator to communicate can have a relationship too.

My husband didn't speak English when we met but I speak fluent Portuguese. Now that we live in the U.S. we speak more English to each other because he needs/wants to learn.

Not really! It's easy enough to be able to say what you generally want and need after a few months of complete immersion. It's not easy to have a conversation about your hopes and dreams in a meaningful way without all your mistakes being distracting; that level of facility with a foreign language usually takes years. So does being funny and really understanding the nuances of meaning and tone in a conversation. And using slang appropriately.
