if you can't communicate with each other that's a red flag at the embassy/consulate interview.

When I met Eunice one year ago she spoke no English and I very little Portuguese, but we comunicated very well from the start.

My portuguese is much better now but she still speaks no English.

Comunication is not totally dependent on speaking the same language.

The Consulate watched us talk when we had our interview since I was there.

We mostly talk Portuguese . I dont know why but I really picked it up fast, perhaps cause I speak Spanish. I knew an american girl living in Salvador, Brasil and she said she learned most of her Portuguese quickly while on her back .

It was difficult cause she has many Brasilian friends here so they all talk as if they are in Brasil. But Val is slowly learning English as I make an effort to talk more in English to her. In fact, I'm mostly talking to her in English but she still responds in Portuguese. Her two sons speak excellent English now.

I am just curious. What happens when the USC is not there and he / she does not show skills in English? Can they say that the USC speaks their native Lingo? Or say if the USC does happen to go to interview without knowing he/she cannot communicate very well? Seems this would not work in favor of the Visa applicant.

I consider myself very lucky as my husband speaks, reads and writes perfect english

But I agree that sometimes not having a common language is not the issue, as we have seen

some people having a perfect communication by just waving to each other

A question comes to mind...how do deaf people fall in love and communicate when one doesn't

know sign language?

I too was married for many years to someone who spoke the same language (an American)....after all of this i finally understood we studied "english" at different places...mine was in the states his was in outerspace..

Waving at each other is nice, but it's sort of hard to plan the shopping list without a common language, let alone how you see yourself managing a household.

If the USC is fluent in the beneficiary's language, that suffices. They're just interested in whether you can communicate; there isn't an English-language requirement. You can show you can understand each other by providing evidence that the USC speaks the language, but at a lot of consulates they just seem to accept the beneficiary's word.

It can be a red flag if the beneficiary and petitioner can't communicate or rely on a translator, but judging from the stories around here they don't seem to require a great level of competence with English (lots of people whose fiances are taking ESL or start to learn English sometimes after they meet) for it to count as a common language.

I spoke Portuguese and English and hubby speaks Spanish and English fluent, so we started our relationship using the third common language, so neither was speaking their native language. Now that I am living here we speak Spanish since I need it to live and work in PR.

maybe.... but it does not appear to have a universal application worldwide at ALL consulates.... I know of many in Kyiv who spoke zero English and there SO spoke zero Russian/Ukrainian and there was never any questioning by the consulate on communication skills, methods and or abilities.

I suppose if that was the situation but the USC is not required to be there.... I wasn't.... and the situations I was specifically referring to were ones where the USC was not present either.....

gotcha.. in the Juarez consulate in Mexico, the us officers know spanish, but they hate to speak it lol.. if you speak to them in english, they're very nice
