Yeah the yobs of today are far less romantic than the yobs of yesteryear Highwaymen didn't shoot people and leave them by the roadside - they stopped the your carriage politely and reasonably explained why they needed to relieve you of your valuables (presumably to redistribute wealth to the poor). Things like Bum Fights are ethically questionable from the people who promote and publish that sort of thing - as much as they are morally repugnant from the (immature) people who go out and actually do that stuff.

I think what surprises me personally is the idea that there is a greater percentage of people in society that want to do the things that are illustrated by this very sad and degrading act of utter stupidity and the connected notion that only by increasing levels of physical punishment, not only in the criminal justice system, but also in schools and families, can society change so that this percentage decreases and/or disappears.

It also saddens me that the most common reaction to it is the knee jerk violence of the 'I wanna kick his head in' variety. To me, while a feeling of outrage is natural, the feeling of 'vengeance is mine' is rather less easy to understand. As a society we have put in place a justice system and while it's not perfect, it does serve to allow society to deal with those who would seek to disrupt or bypass societal laws and conventions.

And what happens when that system fails us?? It is only natural that people will want to take justice in their own hands. I know if this was a relative of mine I would not be waiting on the UK court system to give him a slap on the wrist.

Physical punishment is not the same as pissing on a dead human being is it now.
