It seems like everyone is missing the point....these teens are being charged as adults. What they did was very wrong...but should they be charged as an adult? I am sure someone on VJ has a teen....how would you feel if your teen was being charged as an adult...for a incident like this? Having your son/dauther's life taken away from them over a fight.....it was wrong...very wrong of them...but they should be going to juvie court. The jury was very very wrong to charge these teens for a CRIME....they did not commit any crime...a shoe is not a weapon!!!!!! The jury should have not been all white......please open your eyes.

Do not judge....the media can portray everything differently....who are we to judge???

The media always gets scapegoated. The media is not the one protesting over BS. Where is dumb ### JJ's apology for the Duke Lacrose case.

Well that is the way that county works. It is a free country. If someone does not like one county move elsewhere, like DC. Where I am sure the courts will kiss their ### and blame the blame the white guy.

Well it isn't exactly BS - there does seem to be some indication of an institutional racial bias in how the case was prosecuted, as well as an established background of racial tension that seems to have been either ignored or swept under the carpet.

Of course there is racial tension and certain black Americans have been getting away with it for years now. Heck I have not even been in this country for 2 years now yet am already sick of it. What is swept under the carpet is racism by someone black. Funny how so many of those who wrongly condemned the guys in the Duke lacrosse scandal to death, went all quite on the western front when it turned out the black woman was lying. Not even a freakin apology for ruining those guys reputations. Some of you here are no better than those guys. You will jump on the bandwagon and basically SHOUT "death to the white guy" but almost always play down someone black being racist and call it 'an isolated incident carried about by a lone idiot'..

What does this have to do w/ this thread? I am talking about kids....being charged as an adult in a community where justice is not served (my personal opinion). I am not being racist or making racist statements...afew of us are just stating the facts. Also...I am not black. Also....I am not going to judge...and say whites do this and get away w/ it...or blacks are this....not my place to judge!!! There are so many members on VJ...that come from all different races, cultures, religion's, and backgrounds....and I respect them...and would never want to disrespect anyone in any way, shape, or form (hint hint)

To Blessed to be stressed:) I realize that all things have a purpose and a time.....have faith and the Lord Almighty will provide... when the time is right, he NEVER fails!

"Some" of the kids call it the "white tree".......WHATEVER!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is it right for the hanging of the noose's on the school's property? Well FYI, that is known also as a hate crime!!!!!!!!!!!!

We all know what a noose represents...and it is just WRONG....that is why I asked about lynching and I am quite sure that Jena has a history of them....and it has affected the black community there more then you will ever understand.

Alot of racial tension had esculated.....on the school property...and it was not taken seriously. How can 3 white kids hang 3 noose's on a tree...that was well known...as the White Tree...and just get a 3 day suspension...and it not be looked at as a hate crime...it happened the day after afew black teens sat under it!!!!

Think about it....this all esculated after the noose incident.....which is a hate crime! Why is that form of hate crime not recognized??? I am sure that the Jena 6 are not racist kids.....unfortunately, I do not have documentation of that. It is not right to judge people....remember that....believe what you want....enough said on this end. It is sad when a noosing incident is not looked at as a hate crime or handled as a hate crime. All of this could have truly been avoided!!!

please step away from the pipe. we have already covered everything in this post. look back a page if you forgot. but, i think you remember because you did not quote the past discussions.

ha ha ha....that is funny (please step away from the pipe)....my name is not smoke(pipe=smoke)....that would be you. I was just responding (in my own manner) to the your prior response.

To Blessed to be stressed:) I realize that all things have a purpose and a time.....have faith and the Lord Almighty will provide... when the time is right, he NEVER fails!

You asked for a link I have provided it, but there are many more. You can find various source IF YOU REALLY ARE INTRESTED. You can get the story from different angles. Do your own homework and seek the truth. The audio podcast link that i provided has interviews from various people not just one source. Also I did not post coverage of the protest i posted coverage of the ORIGINAL STORY WHEN IT accured months ago. You can however find articles IF YOU REALLY WANT TO from the time this incident happened leading up till now.

you told me to check my facts. i asked you to show me the facts. you are the one that claimed to be an authority on this case. you are the one that said not all six were kicking this kid. you have provided no proof of your statements. you have only shown that you are not looking at the available facts of this case.

Hmmm I think you are blind as I did provide links of where you can go and look up information relating to this case, and if the facts there are not good enough for you, you can happily conduct your own research. If you think that the links I provided are biased or one sided you can look up other sources on your own accord. Im not here to do your homework. I did provide links of a place for you to start doing your own research and get a wide foundation of the case since you asked me for a link. You are a grown person and any one with a bit of a brain could use goolge to look up various sources to gather facts and information from all angles, thats what I did. There are so many out there I merley provided one of the many. If you really want to know a simple google will provide endless sources. Lets make one thing clear here I NEVER " claimed to be an aurthority on this case", as you stated. Instead of sitting here making false statements which I never said why dont you actually go do your own research? It would be a whole lot better than asking me to show you facts when you can look them up your self. Im sorry I dont spoon feed information, when you can do that your self. Maybe your just too lazy and expect others to do it for you. I am done with this topic good night.

you provided a bunch of one sided garbage is what you provided. i asked for 1 credible news organization w/ factual content relating to your claim that "not all 6 were involved in the beating. you failed to provide it. i asked for it because you were so sharp in your comments to the "12 white sneaker" comment i made directed at pedroh's "white sneaker" comment. why did i ask? because you made it sound like you knew what you were talking about.

I have been following this story since last year and Im glad that it has finally broke into national attention.

but know i see you are clueless to the facts of this case, you claim to have been following for months. when in fact you are purely posting your personal opinion on this subject and misrepresenting it as actual facts.

If its one sided garbage for you why don't you go and look up the information your self? As I said there are MANY places that have viable information. Its just evident that you are unwilling to actually do any research on your own, and are making deductions with out being fully informed of all the events that accured before the Jena 6 made national and world wide headlines. Had the story not been expsosed by independent media to a wider audience the Jena 6 would have never picked the momentum it has therefore causing the story to make national and then world wide news

If you think the story by the award-winning journalists Amy Goodman and Juan Gonzalez is garbage you can look for many other source. In fact these journalist were the ones that exposed the story months ago before it was finally picked up by major news channels. I don't solely rely on facts and points of views from 1 source either. The wonderful thing of independent media is that it strives NOT to produce one sideded garbage like you say. In fact Independent journalism does not have a one sided interest. They provide people with tools and news stories that would other wise not be brought to us by our typical one sided mainstream media soruce. I suggest you look at all the sources available, not just your local news, or CNN who has only been reporting half of the story. CNN's coverage is a shame, the full story needs to be told because so far mainstream media has lacked in its coverage and has only distorted the reality of the case. I hope the mainstream coverage imporves in the US because they are missinforming so many people, and justice will not prevail if people dont get all the details. Its sad that people out side our country have gotten better coverage and know more of whats going with this story yet full decent coverage is so lacking here at home. Heck even David Bowie,a British rock star has donated $10,000 to the legal denfense team of the Jena 6.

I doubt that independent journalism is one sided garbage as their main point of breaking away from commercial media is to improve public access and awareness to news we would other wise be kept clueless about. They actually provide information that brings awareness from many angles. Being commercial free actually allows both sides of the story to be exposed not just what is in the interests of the corporate sponsor. They allow various voices to be heard making more points of view available. People should look at ALL sources available commercial, mainstream and NPR media before making any conclusions. I mean come on who would let an obstetrics doctor preform heart surgery on them vs a specialized heart surgen? Granted they are both doctors but I think I would trust the one that has more insight on the matter.

Live audio of various interviews that were conducted some time ago does exist out there. I wouldn't exactly call testimonies and interviews of students, parents, Jena residents, and school staff "one sided garbage" as you claim. Its obvious that you didnt bother looking any thing up. You are free , and in fact and you should look up as many various sources as possible so you can to find the facts you are looking for your self. Oh and another thing, you say that I'm cluless but I'm clearly not the one asking for, or waiting for facts to be brought me by some one else. The only one who is clueless here is the person who does not bother to do a bit of their own FULL research before making deductions on limited information and coming to a conclusion.

So let me get this straight. People are not protesting against the violence inflicted by the six towards one guy but because they believe they are being unfairly punished..

It would be a slam dunk 'hate crime' if 6 whites beat-up one black.

Very true!

The six Black students beating up on the one White student also appears to be a hate crime IMO. Although the current news reports indicate the "hate crime" committed by the six Black youth was not related to the nooses hung from the tree at the school. I wouldn't hang my hat on that statement or notion. The violence appears to be steamed from the hate crime committed by the White students that hung nooses from the tree IMO. Who, by the way, have only been suspended from school with no current charges pending for their hate crime. We are in the first post segregation generation and hopefully in the next generations to come, we'll get further from the ignorance and violence that stems from our historical struggles with one another. One can only hope... In the meantime, the hate crime committed by the White students should be brought to justice and those six Black students need to be charged accordingly for their hate and battery crimes. Effective immediately, they should all be expelled from school.

Cheers!!!

My thought on the nose is that racism is not illegal in America. If it ever becomes illegal, only then would I back charging those for hanging up a noose.

Though if racism was illegal, there would be a lot of people on 'both' sides of the fence up for fines and charges.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

I am in agreeance with Number6, The_dip_stick, Misterfancy pants and boo boo on this discussion. My first question was why was something called "THE WHITE TREE allowed to even exist on a high school campus in the first place. The punishment is TOO HARSH!!!!! and does not fit the crime and I am glad that people are standing up to fight for what is right.

that is one of the best things about america, the right to voice your opinion. but, i must disagree w/ you as well. "THE WHITE TREE" is the name the students of the school put on the tree. it is not what the school calls it. it is not what the board of education calls it. and it is not what the town of jena calls it. as far as the punishment being too harsh. pfftt what ever. 6 little thugs jump on a kid knock him unconcious. then continue the assault by kicking him while he is out cold and totally defenseless. a group of teachers & students stop the assault so fortuneatly the kid doesn't die or suffer any permenant damage. these little hoodlums planned, and executed a violent, racial hate crime. and they deserve every damn thing they have gotten & will get from the department of corrections. and no amount of jesse jackson & al sharptons horsesh!t is going to change that. notice the rally didn't change anything in the courts mind?

I haven't read this entire thread.

However, knowing that this happened in a rural community in the South, knowing that this happened in a community that had (even if it's informal) a tree for white kids, knowing that a black kid felt the need to ask for permission to sit under said tree, knowing that nooses were hung in the aftermath of their request, knowing all well the use of nooses to intimidate black folk in the deep south at one point in time, knowing that the attempted murder weapon was a sneaker....

I am inclined to believe that Jesse Jackson is right.

you are absolutely entitled to to have & voice your opinion. and i respect your opinion on this subject aswell as others we have disagreed on. i would like to explain my & the prosecutions view of the "sneaker as a weapon" stance. this is the definition of a weapon: from msn encarta:

1. device designed to injure or kill: a device designed to inflict injury or death on an opponent

2. something used to gain advantage: something used as a way of getting an advantage in a situation

in this case. the shoe clearly & undeniably does meet this definition. the provides protection to the foot from cuts, abrassion, and a small amount of padding. it also provides a more rigid and pronounced surface to strike with.(laces, leather or canvas seems, and the sole of the shoe)

a shoe sitting on the ground is not a weapon. but a shoe on someones foot while they deliver a blow with that foot is a weapon. it provides protection to the foot while it increases the amount of damage made by the strike.

an example/question/answer: have you ever seen a sanctioned martial art competition where shoes were permitted to be worn when head or body kicks are permitted? answer:no. why: the shoe is an enhancement to the strike, therefore it is a weapon.
