So let me get this straight. People are not protesting against the violence inflicted by the six towards one guy but because they believe they are being unfairly punished..

It would be a slam dunk 'hate crime' if 6 whites beat-up one black.

i was waiting for someone to say that

they are also protesting, because weeks before, one of the suspects got assaulted by 3 white men, not kids, and police didn't press charges, also, another kid threatened him with a shotgun, the black kid tried to grab the shotgun from the kid, u know, to avoid being shot, and they press charges against the black kid because of burglary!!! what about the threat?? According to this the FBI were called in to investigate the noose incident and determined that it was a hate crime, but no charges were filed given that the perpetrators were underage. Given that - the school board decision seems rather bizarre, especially given the principals recommendation that they be expelled.

Washington said FBI agents who went to Jena in September to investigate the noose report, and other federal officials who examined what happened, concluded it "had all the markings of a hate crime."

The incident wasn't prosecuted as such because it didn't meet the federal standards required for the teens to be certified as adults, Washington said. A court makes the final decision on whether to drop their juvenile status.

The three white teens were under 18, with no prior records, and no group such as a Ku Klux Klan was found to be behind their actions.

It was left up to the school to discipline the students, who were briefly suspended from classes, despite the principal's recommendation that they be expelled, Walter said.

Washington said federal officials examined the way the school handled the infractions, and whether black students were being treated differently than whites. The officials found it was not unusual for the school superintendent to reinstate students after the principal recommends expelling them.

Washington said he thinks most people were disappointed the three students didn't get more severe punishment.

Racial tension in the town increased after the noose incident. In November, someone burned the main academic building. The arson has not been solved, but many believe the incident is linked to racial tension.

yes i understand the white boys did something horrible by hanging those nuses, BUT GIMME A BREAK, these kids almost killed this kid. its NOT a fk'ing black white issue anymore, its a human issue where a high school boy offended some other high school boys and the boys went to far with showing their anger with it. if they had roughed him up a lil, yea whatever, OH and you wouldnt be hearing about it all over the news, but THE 6 BOYS chose to continue to beat the kid until he ended up in the hospital. i feel sorry for NONE of them bc the white boy deserved getting a good smack for what he did, but he didnt deserve to be beaten that badly.

it also becomes more out of prportion when retarded jesse jackson ( dumb )and sharpton (dumber) get involved bc THEY make it a racist thing.

(And I think the kid with the shotgun got in trouble because after he took it away from the white kid, he tried to give it to the cops.)

The kid who was beat up had a mild concussion and a black eye that was so bad he was able to go to a school party that night. Aggravated assault, maybe, but attempted murder? The kids aren't heroes but sending them to prison for up to 20 years over a black eye seems wrong.

These guys are protesting to free the black kids. Therefore they are defending these guys solely on the color of their skin rather than the crime they committed. Now can you imagine 6 white kids had beaten up a black kid. They would be asking demanding for their heads on a platter.

Anyone want proof. DUKE Lacrose case. I am still waiting for an apology from Jessie Dumbass Jackson for ruining those guys reputations...

6 on 1 caused by racial tensions is not aggravated assault. it is a hate crime. at the very least it is attempted manslaughter. they (6 on 1) were not trying to beat him up, 1 or 2 could have done that. 6 on 1 is a beat down to send him to intensive care or worse.

I don't believe it does. I think they should ALL be punished.

For one thing, it seems to me that the beating incident might well have been avoided if appropriate action by the school authorities to appropriately deal with incidents like this thing with nooses. The school board ignored both the principals recommendation for expulsion and the FBI investigation that determined that this would likely have been a hate crime if the kids involved were 'of age'. That wasn't a primary cause - but its illustrative of the unwillingness of local authorities to take race issues seriously until the result is open violence.

Second, per the OP article, while there's no doubt that the kids who did the beating should be punished - I can see a legitimate civil rights argument being made for apparently unequal punishments in general being granted to whites, giving them lesser sentences for equivalent crimes committed by blacks.
