I've taken lately to drinking soy milk. It's not too bad!

Claudeth loves the soy and is getting the flovored stuff. I just can't bring myself to try it

I like milk every day...in my coffee. I buy 2% cow's milk. I don't really like to drink it unless I have some Nestle Quik to mix in with it.

I tried Soy milk when i was on a special protein shake diet i was put on by my fitness trainer back home. It tasted alright with the flavoured shake mix but on its own it tasted disgusting!!

I usually drink 2% here by itself... it's pretty good for breakfast, and helps the calcium build in der bones.

Also really fond of sweetened soy milk from the local asian supermarket - and before everyone says "EEEWWW" it's really not as bad as it sounds. I have fond memories of sitting at a little outdoor cafe in HK drinking sweet hot soy milk and eating Asian fried long donuts with my dad. ^_^

Never. I stoped drinking milk five years ago. So far it might have been the biggest health improvement I've made in my whole life (actually it might just be the only one I've made so far in my whole life )

And I agree with Nagishkaw, milk is for babies (as are female breasts and toy trains but everyone knows that dads are the ones who play with them nonetheless).

Can you elaborate on that?

Can you elaborate on that?

Oh sure :)! But first I want to remind you that I'm not a medical doctor or a nutrition specialist, so don't take this as a foolproof way to make yourself healthier :).

I had developed a serve chronic influenza (i.e. I coughed and sneezed the whole year around and had an ear infection twice a year) when I was ten years old and the condition lasted till I was around 16. After that a milder form of the chronic influenza lasted until I was 20. I was being diagnosed for influenza, allergies, asthma among other things but none applied to my condition. At 20 I moved on my own and stopped drinking milk since I didn't like carrying it from the store as drinkable water was coming from the tap. It didn't take more than a few weeks until my chronic influenza was gone. I started to suspect that the reason behind my chronic influenza was milk. So I tried to drink it a few glasses every now and then, once I stopped drinking it. The result was always serve stomach pains and other digestion problems. It wasn't because of lactose. I've never been lactose intolerant, but I apparently had hypersensitivity (not an allergy) towards casein (the protein that milk contains). Casein is a rather bad protein in large quantities because practically all humans digest it rather poorly and it turns into slime. My chronic influenza was thus slime coming form casein that I was trying to get rid of by coughing. I'm not saying that milk is toxic; I'm just saying that most humans, especially in Northern Europe, Central Europe, British Isles and Northern America, consume too much milk. I still eat ice-cream around once a week, I eat cheese daily and I use real butter in around 1/3 of all my cooking (to the rest I use olive oil, I never use margarine).

In general milk is a rather poor way to improve ones nutrition. It contains some protein, sugars and fat. While the fat is good, both milk protein (casein) and sugars (among those lactose) are not well suited for human nutrition. The alleged benefits of milk are vitamins and calcium. The vitamins are mostly add-ons and thus you could obtain them by e.g. drinking Vitamin Water (by Coca-cola company). The calcium is a problem. Yes, it's good for your bones, but calcium is practically useless for your bones alone without magnesium and vitamin D. Calcium and magnesium should be obtained in around 1 to 1 relation and milk contains between 10 and 15 times more calcium than magnesium. Milk practically lacks vitamin D, unless it's added, and in those areas of the world where milk is mostly consumed (Northern Europe, British Isles etc.) humans suffer from vitamin D shortage due to lack of sunlight (you can easily fix this problem by consuming between 1000 and 1500 IU of vitamin D in supplements - I don't recommend that you eat more than 2000 IU of it daily, since it's possible to have a vitamin D overdose except from the sun due to the fact that pigment melanin and already produced D vitamin dosages block the production of excess vitamin D). The problem with this excess calcium is that it contributes to kidney stones in the long run and reduces the absorption of minerals such as iron or zinc. Furthermore freely roaming calcium (Ca) may transfer into calcium oxide (CaO or Ca(OH)2) which blocks your blood vessels. Currently approx 3% of arterial plaque is due to cholesterol while a wholly 70% is due to calcium oxide (vitamin D is an effective way to battle against this problem and most of all heart and blood vessel problems seem to occur in countries (Northern Europe, British Isles etc.) where calcium intake is high and vitamin D intake is low).

Hope this helps .

I love milk. I don't guzzle it out of the carton like I did growing up though.

I aim to get my 2 to 3 serving of milk and milk products every day.

I mix it up a bit... skim cow's milk or soy with my cereal everyday and every once in awhile a small glass later in the day.

I LOVE milk and could drink it in large quantities, especially in the cooler months. I just don't have a tast for it when it is hot out... :dead:

Soy milk has become much better tasting. In fact I had a chocolate soy for breakfast this morning and you'd never know it was soy instead of regular chocolate milk. And at 150 calories, it gives a nice bit of protein while satisfying a sweet craving.

I've discovered that I'm apparently lactose-intolerant. Ergo, Soy milk for me now.

I'm not 100% certain, but I've read (from numerous sources) and heard (from quite a few people) that soy itself can "lower testosterone levels." Now, I don't think it'd really affect a male adversely unless he was having milk a lot and everyday. If you're not doing that, then I'll bet you're fine. I've just been warned against Soy Milk, since I'm male. :star:

As for me... I'm also lactose-intolerant. I can use the Lactaid Milk (although I don't really care for the stuff; it seems to taste a little weird) or some other somewhat unique varieties of "milk." There's some made of almonds or rice. Apparently, the "almond milk" doesn't sit too well with me, but the "rice milk" works just fine.

Both the "almond" and "rice" types come in original, vanilla and chocolate flavors. There are also unsweetened versions as well and a number of different companies to choose from.

2% milk for us. Gary uses half and half in his coffee.

Neither of us drink that much milk, usually just with cereal or dinner.
