Boo-Yah, it's a discussion forum. Not a 'I am posting my opinion NOBODY COMMENT ON IT OR EXPECT ME TO SUPPORT MY OPINIONS WANNA SWEETIE!' forum. We can treat you that way if you want, but that means we're going to ignore your comments rather than assuming you have a point or an argument.

Moreover, if he’s going to critique other peoples comments – it would seem rather churlish not to expect likewise in return.

Likes to give it out – but can’t take it is how that appears…

Can you point out the personal attacks so that we knows what is considered a personal attack and what isn't? This all seems like everyday stuff here to me...

It's mainly the little digs and the "naming and shaming" of the members. It isn't serious (hence why the thread is still open!) but the potential is there, hence my warning to keep things on track. :star:

Huh? I thought we were talking about architecture?

I'm sure that was in there somewhere, but I think it was definitely a stretch to go from one article about possibly disturbed (likely not - given that the educational authority has dealt with the incident and closed the door on the case) kids to broad comments about the corruption of society and how this can be proven by extremely oblique methods.

Its a puzzler for sure.

Some people like to attribute any and every problem with society today to hedonism, the sixties, San Francisco values, etc. It does help the argument to start with an actual problem though.

Ah.. the dictionary definitions

Well you clearly do not understand the concept of forum and personal opinion. If someone said the earth is flat in OT; oh well that is their opinion. Who made you judge, jury and executioner on whether they are right or wrong; especially in a freakin family immigration forum.

Re-read and you wouldnt have to wonder or be puzzeled. I like the way some get pleasure in getting just a couple more little diggs in there. Some get away with it though.

Well we were almost there with STDs which I’ve a feeling are rather more prolific than in years past, but even then its still a stretch to say society as a whole is ‘generally worse’, which is a vague statement that relies on subjective relative truths, rather than anything that can reasonably be proven. It is possible to look at things such as changing economics and say that certain conditions may be better or worse (I think in that respect – things are better than 50 years ago, as far as a general standard of living goes), but certainly not by things like aesthetics

I think it depends on the STD, to be honest. Some are less common, some are more common... what's definitely more common is being more open about them and tracking statistics on it.

But it's not like they popped into existence after a golden age where no one ever had extramarital sex. Just even look at literature and memoirs. Or of diagnoses of syphilis in (gasp) Victorian England or WWII stories of catching disease from the local prostitute and getting treated by the ol' doc. They used to be called 'social diseases' or 'venereal diseases'... before the 60s. AIDS doesn't pop up until the 80s (does that make it Cosby's fault), but they've found evidence of syphilis in mummies.

The idea that previous generations were perfect and pure and we are living in a corrupt age is older than those previous generations. Cf. Hindu mythology, Plato, the book of Daniel, etc. Are things worse than they were in the 50s and 60s? They're worse than our country-music song idea of the fifties, but that's not the same thing.

True enough. Moreover, while the rose tinted view of certain historical periods might be considered ‘charmingly naïve’ in a grass is always greener kind of way – in a historical context mass self delusions about things like this have been extremely dangerous, and have been used as a basis for some pretty odious world views (i.e. things were so much better before Group X messed it up).

Well it clearly comes down to what is important for each individual. Stuff like family, understanding for one another, caring for one another and giving a helping hand are important fundamentals of a society. Well they are for me and many others. The aesthetics of a city, of the area I live in also matters a lot to me. These have suffered over the decades. For others the high divorce rate is simply collateral damage for the so-called progress of this era in, for example, marriage rights for lesbian poodles.

Definitely a case of each to their own..

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.
