Censorship on TV

I've gotten used to all the "f" words on TV being replaced with their more acceptable equivalents, like "freakin'" or "darn", but I was quite surprised the other day when I noticed that other words are being "silenced" too.

Me and hubby were watching VH1 Classic, and Tom Petty's "You Don't Know How It Feels" was playing. So, when he got to the chorus, instead of hearing "Let's get to the point, let's roll another joint", I heard "let's roll another mmmmm".

So, is "joint" a swear word now? Is it not okay to say it?

I was upset they butchered the song this way, cause I'm a big Tom Petty fan Also, this song has a line "she don't give a damn for me" - and that wasn't silenced, so I guess, "damn" is still okay

Anyways, it got me thinking. And I wanted to ask - what do you folks think about censorship and isn't it being taken too far?

Censorship is ridiculous - especially when they take odd words out of songs, but leave in entire subtexts that are ripe for subversive interpretation.

The rationale is double stupid when you apply it to books (I don't like the words the author used, so I'll cross them out and insert my own).

That said - the TV version of Robocop is funnier than the original movie because of all the outlandish swear words the censors came up with to 'sanitise' the profanity.

The unrated version is the best - the scene where the ED-209 malfunctions and machine-guns that executive was drastically cut down for TV.

I feel the same way. I just experienced it not to long ago. Some hate censorship, until they want it.
