Take your passport, EAD card and any other notice of actions with you to the SS office. You will be issued a temporary SSnumber in the name that is listed in the EAD.

As for your driver's liscense; you can apply for one with your new EAD card, again in the same name. Since you do not have a previous driver's liscense, some states require you take an informative class in drunk driving and its ramifications. You should be able to find all the info you need at Georgia's DMV web site. http://www.dds.ga.gov/

Getting the drivers license was the first thing my husband did when he was here. Be sure to bring all ORIGINALS with you. If you don't even have a drivers license, you will probably have to take drivers training. My husband had his license from jordan and did a transfer ( had to take a written test and a driving test).

Hi Chelsea

I was able to get a Temp. SSN when I arrived. I was also able to get a driver's license. Unfortunately the license expires the day my I-94 expires. (Sept 11). Now I cannot renew the license until I get my EAD or green card. The Georgia license office seems strict about sticking to the I-94 date no matter what you tell them about the AOS process. Be prepared for a short term license.

FYI, I had to write a written test as well as do a road test to get my Georgia license. Seems my Canadian skills were not valid.

take care

Marc

The EAD should be good enough to get a driver's license.

Florida is probably one of the easiest states to get a license in. My husband was out of status for 5 years and continuously had one. Hell, Florida has the most lax driving laws ever (October 1st, no more no fault requirement? No inspection law?)

To the OP:

Looks like you need an EAD.

Anyone know what translation provisions the DMV will make (in my case, California) for an applicant who's not a native English speaker? I'm sure the CA DMV offers the test in Spanish, but that doesn't help a lot for my Russian cutie. :)

http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/dl600.pdf

That's the handbook - says that you have to read the English signs, but if you read a language the test is not provided in, you can have an interpreter.

Handbook is available in Russian via mail.

Thanks for all the info guys. I checked into it. i Got my SS Number today and all i need to do is go to the DDS tomorrow and i can get my learners permit. Costs $10 for citizens. $20 for anyone else. I will need to take the knowledge test and a vision test but any new driver in the state of georgia has to do that. My learners permit will expire by the time my E.A.D does but that won't matter cause i should have passed the name checks and all that jazz by then and i will have my Green Card.

John.

No such thing as a temp SSN.. SSN's are issued for the LIFE......

YMMV

Just as a comment.....we had a heck of a time even getting a state ID out of California for my sweetheart. Mir and I went to the DMV with her SSN card, marriage license and I-94 and asked for an ID. We filled out the application. The girl took it and started inputing the information. Then she told us...you don't have at least 60 days left on your I-94, so we can't give you an ID card. I explained that we had filed for AOS and she wasn't going to be leaving the country, but the girl said it didn't matter and we needed proof.

The bad part was....she continued plugging away at her computer and then with a smile said, "That will be $22 please." I thought she had somehow figured out a way to make it happen since she was asking me for the fee, so I wrote out my check and gave it to her. Silly me!!!! She handed me a piece of paper with an ID number on it, but then told me to come back when we had processed her AOS. I looked and saw the paper was only a receipt for the money and not a temporary ID card. What??? That was a waste!

If we had finished her AOS and had a green card she would be applying for a driver's license and wouldn't need a darn state ID. I only needed the ID right away for the bank in order to add Mir to my account as they would not accept her passport alone and wanted a state ID. Consequently, I had just paid for a worthless piece of paper that said I have given away $22 to the state of California for something Mir won't ever need. Who needs both a state ID and driver's license....the number is the same in California on both ID and DL.

The only good thing was that the bank did not look closely, or if they did they didn't care, at the document and accepted it as it had the ID number on it.

Just passing on my frustration and stupid mistake in hopes it might help someone else not make the same one.

Take care!

Scott
