I have now seen this incident.

Was the guy acting like a jerk? Probably.

Is tazering a good way to stop people from acting like jerks, especially when it's a question of wasting people's time with dumb questions and there is no immediate threat of violence or danger? No.

I am not even a fan of Kerry but this guy's behavior was just dumb.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Still PH is right though - "Dumb" doesn't deserve that, however you spin it.

Heavy-handed ideas seem rather too popular these days.

I'd say the guy was a passionate college student getting the chance to talk to a v important man & he was fashioning having an 'intellectual discussion of peers' with him...and while that certainly makes him a PITA and a long winded blowhard...there was ABSOLUTELY NO NEED for what transpired.

I'd like to know what Kerry was doing when this poor kid was gettin pulled away...or even when he was getting zapped. He prolly ordered the hit, lol!!!!!

I have to agree with Lisa D, what was Sen. Kerry doing? I didn't see enough on the so called News to make out what his reaction was...

Good grief, what happened to that post?

Well on a RARE occassion such as you and I agreeing :P I had to find the answer...

UPDATE: Kerry condemns student's arrest

At the ABC's Political Radar blog, Rick Klein reports that Kerry is condemning the arrest of 21-year-old University of Florida student Andrew Meyer.

"In 37 years of public appearances, through wars, protests and highly emotional events, I have never had a dialogue end this way," Kerry wrote in a statement. "I believe I could have handled the situation without interruption, but I do not know what warnings or other exchanges transpired between the young man and the police prior to his barging to the front of the line and their intervention. I asked the police to allow me to answer the question and was in the process of responding when he was taken into custody."

"I was not aware that a taser was used until after I left the building," Kerry added. "I hope that neither the student nor any of the police were injured. I regret enormously that a good healthy discussion was interrupted."

Klein adds, "Kerry, who was the Democrats’ nominee in 2004, is no longer assigned Secret Service protection, and does not bring his own security to events. That left University of Florida police in charge of security -- to notable results on Monday."

So apparantly, he left.

However, the joke he made while Meyer was on the floor with police attempting to restrain him was weird in a typically Kerry way. "Unfortunately, he's not available to come up here and swear me in as president." Thud.

On the surface, that appears suspicious to me. He was in the process of answering and then he was leaving the building unaware of the confrontation?

Is there more to this than we have been told?????

Yeah Marc, hilarious.

So, because the guy was being dumb, it was ok to tazer him or what?

I guess it was okay. From what I saw the kid was resisting. The loving John Kerry didnt seem to mind, he was rattling on all the way through the whole thing.

It appears as though Kerry is an ###! I guess that's not news.

I agree he is an ###. What concerns me more is that he has no balls

I still don't think purely 'resisting is enough to get someone tazered though. It wasn't a reasonable response to the situation. As the piece Lisa found quotes, there were enough burly guys to bundle him out of the area without that.

They tasered him on the floor. That's like putting someone in a half nelson and having someone kick them in the nuts.
