So I'm just up tonite not really having much to do.. and I click on the add at the top of the visajourney site - K-1 Fiance Lawyer thingy.. and it states the following in the Q&A..

"You're Not Sure You Need An Attorney

Most people who file a K-1 visa petition without the aid of an attorney have a failure either at the USCIS or at the Embassy, leading to very long delays. Of course all these people did their research and they thought they had everything right when they filed the petition. But, like the captain of the Titanic, they could see only the tip of the iceberg, and they didn’t realize that the iceberg was constantly moving."

Ahh... Lawyer Speak.. gotta love it.. Thankfully I was one of the "very few and fortunate" who didn't have delays and gross oversight" but the bit "The Iceberg was constantly moving" is accurate!! :)

we had a lawyer and the lawyer was the one who caused delays with our case :P

I found VJ a few months after we had already started our journey... I wish I had found it sooner...

I constantly had to keep emailing our lawyer pointing out mistakes he had made ...:P

We had a lawyer, she was fine, but not worth the $2500!! At the time we were both extremely busy (she then worked at State dept :-) ) so we figured a lawyer would make things easier on us. Not really since you stil have to gather up al the documents and filled them in! She was just a pricey proof reader, lol oh well

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I bought the lawyer line when we did the K1 -- and I had to keep on top of things very carefully nonetheless. The $1800 was too much for what we got. When we did the K3, I consulted with two lawyers (that I found on this site), retained neither, took advice from both, spent $175 on consulting fees. And things seemed to go smoother this time, in spite of the fact that our situation was a bit more complicated.

No doubt about it - vj has saved its members lots of time and money. (And repaired a lot of situations created by lawyers...)

I don't really know if I'm aloud to say this, but I don't own the site so I think its ok. When those advertised links are visited from here, vj makes some money and that helps keep this site free...it probably wouldn't hurt us all to check those sites from time to time for news or general reference material.

I had a lawyer and he was wonderful. The $1800 I paid him was well worth it. Plus, I can call him anytime as long as Javi is still dealing with immigration and he will answer questions, free of charge. Well I know that's included in the $1800 I paid him but that's a pretty good deal considering our case wasn't a cut and dry one. If I had it to do over again, I'd probably pay him $3600 to do what he did. It made my life so much easier. And, up until I took our time line off, we had one of the fastest time lines for the type of visa we got, at the time we got it. Not sure if that had anything to do with the lawyer we had or just our good fortune. Anyway, just wanted to throw that out there because I know lawyers don't always get talked good about around here. Just wanted to say they aren't all bad.

Just couldn't stay my @ss away!

I found out last week that a woman I work with is going to pay a lawyer $5000 to do her husband's immigration paperwork. He is here on a work visa and they got married a few weeks ago. I asked her what kind of visa they have to get in that situation and she didn't know. I came home that day to find out the answer because I was curious and saw they would be doing Adjustment of Status. I don't know how complicated AOS is, but for $5000 plus the fees on top of it  I did tell her about VJ, but she just isn't comfortable filling out the forms herself. I feel so bad for her.

I was linked to VJ by a member here when I was searching info about the K1, I read VJ all over, spent about 2 months reading here while preparing my papers, then filed. K1 went smoothly, then AOS was a breeze, all done with VJ alone. I kept reading about people paying fortunes for lawyers and I can't think why when the case is a straight forward one.

Of course some cases require a lawyer, but using a lawyer when he's just gonna get your forms, put in an envelope and mail it, I can't see why.

My lawyer cost $1500 and he was well worth the expense. My (now) husband and I were busy working and I would have found it very difficult to juggle my job (which included international travel every week), and being available to complete and file papers etc. Again, like a previous poster, my timeline for K1 was very short, and whilst this could be just good luck, I prefer to believe that my lawyer made the difference. I used him again for AOS and received my GC within 8 weeks of filing. He charged me $750 for the AOS, and with the $1500 for the K1, the whole process was $2250. Considering the work he did, and the outcome, I think I got a real bargain.

Aos isnt difficult at all, but then again he came over on a work visa and there may be more to it as opossed to the k-1 visa. either way i didnt think AOS was difficult enough to get a lawyer and pay THAT much. Unless they have a real complicated case.
