SSN, lack of immigration status verification HELP!

Hi all,

If anyone could advise on the following or has been in the same situation I would really appreciate your wisdom as I'm failing to see the funny side of all this endless bureacracy today...

I followed the advice on VJ and waited 2 weeks after my arrival in the US to visit the SSA office and apply for my SSN. I was told I wasn't in the database and they would verify this with immigration, I got a letter saying this would take no more than 4 weeks (yeah, I know, I have to stop falling for this stuff). Today, after the 4 weeks are up I went back and waited over 3 hours to be shown the form immigration sent back claiming they are unable to verify my status and asking the SSA to re-submit the same docs they sent previously.

The clerk told me this could take another 3-4 weeks minimum. Happy Days!

I was all set to put together our AOS package in the next week or so and am now very worried as without my SSN I can't be added to the lease or utility bills or get a joint bank account with my husband -basically all of the stuff you need to prove joint residence. We will have wedding cert and photos and I'm listed on his cell phone plan and as a life insurance beneficiary but I'm not sure this is enough.I'm also worried that Newark immigration may simply have lost all my visa documents or maybe just can't be bothered to enter me on the system in less than 2 months...

Should I wait and see and put off submitting AOS? I have until late October but really don't want to lose a month just waiting for something that may never happen.

Thanks everyone, hope you are all having a better day!

Lauren

You don't have to supply evidence in the AOS packet, only at the interview. Go ahead and send it.

You dont need a SSN to file for AOS and you dont need to send any evidence other than your marriage certificate... you gather your evidence over the comming months to take with you to your interview.... so go ahead and file for your AOS.... where it asks for SSN just put NONE....

Good Luck

May have been some kind of screw up at the POE. I'm impressed that your SSA office even knew you were eligible for an SSN as a K1er. That's more than my local SSA office knew!

I think it will come through ok after some time more time has passed.

But I agree - its not a problem to not have it for AOS purposes.

Thanks everyone, I will go ahead with AOS but still am a little concerned over my SSN -then again what can I do but wait until USCIS decide to pick up my paperwork and enter me into their system...At times I think we are the only ones taking imigration seriously!

Something screwy is going on because you should be in there within two weeks of POE. You might try contacting the USCIS to see why you aren't in the system.

I'm not sure the USCIS can help him there - wouldn't that be more of a CBP issue? Some folks do not appear after two weeks - which is only a rule of thumb anyway. I suspect it could take longer for a host of reasons.

Just a guess, but I wonder if applying for AOS/getting NOA1 could somehow 'trigger' his appearance in the SAVE system, and thus resolve the SSN problem at the same time?

I would defer to VJ member 'I Quit' for a definitive answer on this.

Not necessarily, there have been a few incidences (myself included) where the information just wasn't there even after a couple of weeks. It happens, but the information does tend to get there eventually.

It took me 9 weeks to get my SSN through.

There was a case here where the person wasn't entered at all and had to get another I-94. It's rare but it can happen.

An infopass couldn't hurt.

Pretty sure that isn't going to do anything. In fact most of the time the EAD card being issued doesn't do anything if the AOS is pending.

SSA can now send a follow up electronic verification request if the initial verification comes up empty and the majority of times that's enough. Where things get mucked up is if the response from the secondary request is to send copies of the documents with the G-845. If that happens all bets are off to how long you will be waiting and with K-1 status you are probably going to be into or past the 14 day period before things are completed.

Do you know for sure that no information came up when they tried to verify your status? Your name being spelled wrong allowing for 1 letter to be off, your date of birth being wrong or the wrong immigration status would cause them to go to the next verification step.
