Activating Visa process at border

Hello,

When it is time to cross into the States with an approved visa, do I need to call the border first to set up an appointment, or do I just drive down, and talk to whoever is available when I get there?

Is there anything we can do make the process smoother when we get to the border (we'll be driving)? Such as having certain documents, or ensuring certain possessions are not in our car (other than the obvious... firearms, drugs, etc).

It most likely will be my brother driving me over with my two dogs and one cat. Do I just need to show that the pets have up to date rabies vaccinations, like I do when I visit, or is more paperwork required when I am crossing for the purpose of living there?

This I'm afraid is a "luck" situation.. will it be busy, will you get a Officer that has had a good day /bad day.. will they actually look at any of your belongings in the vehicle?

I think having all the paperwork in order (your sealed envelope & Passport/Visa & cash for the I-94), a brief manifest for your belongings and a very patient attitude is a great way to start..

It's pretty painless from my experience, one of the easiest things along the process..

You'll need a health certificate for the dogs, just like you do when you visit.....not sure about the cats. I know from US to Canada, and for dogs to fly within the states, the health cert has to be issued within 10 days of travel.

Cats are really easy to bring over. As long as they look healthy, they're good to go, but you may want a letter from your vet just as a safeguard. There was a post in the last couple of days that had a link to the actual regulations on cats.

The Form I-94 (Arrival-Departure Record) is a white form that needs to be filled out when you go through the POE. Part of it will be stapled into your passport -- you will need it for your AOS application.

I'm not sure Custom & Border Control know either!! Tee hee... Our Officer said .. "I dunno - 7$ sounds good to me!".. They seemed unclear if they should even charge me anything for mine!!
