Anyone know if a 4 hour layover at JFK is enough? If not and the cheapest goes through there again what is the minimum that you'd feel comfy with?

Actually Doodle if I were you I would just drive from Boston to JFK, it would only cost you like a tank of gas and you wouldn't have to have the hassle of worrying whether he made his connecting flight or not. And you could spend the night in the city before heading back home! (Maybe I'm just crazy though... I live halfway between New York and Boston but if you hit the traffic all wrong it's the ride from hellll!)

Divorced. To hell with him.

I agree. I went down to pick Wadi up from JFK. IIRC, it took him 2.5 hours to get through immigration.

I think 4 hours in JFK is good, but you never know.

When Simo and I came back from Morocco last summer (Aug 2006), immigration made us BOTH wait for several hours standing like cattle in this overflow room with no seats, then called us up to the desk, asked Simo how long he had been in his country, and stamped his passport (no reason given for holding us there).

Meanwhile, we were late for our next flight (we HAD scheduled 4 hours between flights, but different airlines) and 2 out of 4 pieces of our luggage were left in Casablanca.

Luckily our next flight was also late--we made it to the flight after a crazed running-with-too-much-pottery sprint from terminal to terminal, then had to wait another 6 hours to take off due to a big thunderstorm.

We got home at 2:30 am...and of course another piece of our luggage was lost in JFK.

I hate JFK airport.

I bought Simo's one-way ticket directly from Royal Air Maroc when he first came to the US. He was able to pick up the ticket at a ticket counter in Marrakech (I did have to call RAM and then fax them credit card info, but it wasn't too difficult).

I have also bought tickets on ORBITZ--www.orbitz.com--sometimes the best prices, especially if you aren't flying a simple, one-leg flight.

Good luck!

Well when I keep seeing the cheap air via EgyptAir I always think hmmmm..have him arrive on a Friday night and stay 2 nights in NYC.............but then I'm like hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.....when I arrive in Cairo the very LAST thing on my mind is site seeing the first two days. The poor guy is gonna be flat out tired after a 12 hour flight and probably will want to sleep a whole day so I don't think he's going to want to site see in nyc OR do a 4 1/2 hour ride from NYC to Boston.

Personally I think staying a couple days to see NYC is a great idea. Moh flew from Cairo to NY, had a 4 hr layover then flew to Detroit. He was tired but after a normal night's sleep he was fine. To answer your question...under normal circumstances a 4 hour layover is plenty. Moh got through immigration and customs within 15-20 mins so he plenty of time to spare.

ETA...Egyptair is definitely the way to go. Moh's ticket flying Egyptair was about 1000LE cheaper than flying Lufthansa.

Well when the time comes we'll talk about it. It would be awesome if he came at that time, right before Thanksgiving and we could spend a weekend there. I will have to see when they put the lights up in Rockefeller Plaza 'cause that would be awesome!

Of course he prolly won't be here till next summer so why am I even thinking like this. lol

Aww Doodle I hope he can take that flight you found.

Ramy is insisting we spend his first night back here in the city, I thought the same thing that he would be too tired to want to do anything but sleep but he doesn't want to get off the plane and come straight back to cow-town CT  Can't imagine why....

Wow well no hotel if he gets here at the end of november since they average around $350 a night during that time!! Unless I can find a good deal via priceline he'll just have to make that connection. lol. the difference in fair between arriving in jfk and in boston is less than $50 so even the tank of gas wouldn't be worth it.

ugh!! $350 a night?!?!?! You could almost buy a car for that  (my first car cost $400 lollll)

If Ramy gets here that late we're definitely NOT staying in Manhattan. noooooooo way.

And you're right, $50 difference isn't worth the time or gas lol. Now if it was $200 different...lol

October is just as bad if not worse due to the UN assembly. So basically from Oct thru Dec is out for us to site see in nyc. I always go in the summer, though I also always fry since it's so hot, and I've never paid over $150 for a decent hotel per night. I do shop around though and sometimes use priceline but STILL, that is even on the high side of what I have historically paid.

If anything maybe I'll drive to meet him there but ideally I want his first steps on us soil to be in Boston. :)

On one of the earlier postings in this thread, someone had mentioned about getting a temporily work permit from JFK. Do they still offer those there, if so does it cost anything? I was told they no longer do that. My husband is getting off there and catching a flight to MPLS and that would be great if he could get a work permit there cause he is so eager to start working when he gets here. As he put it then he can start supporting his family here instead of waiting.

Thanks for any information.

K3s aren't eligible for the temp work permit. Sorry to say this but be prepared to have your husband sitting around for the next 3-5 months. We applied for Moh's work permit end of May and we're still waiting!!!!!

Are K1's eligible for the temp work permit? If so that's just another thing that doesn't make sense lol. And if not, well it doesn't make much sense anyway :(. I find it almost impossible to explain to my family WHY he can't work till he gets his EAD. "Well that doesn't make sense!" they say, "He's got to be able to work. This doesn't make sense to me. Can't he just work somewhere under the table??" NO, no, he CAN'T. :bonk:

Divorced. To hell with him.

K1s are still eligible for temp EAD (that is if they're still issuing them). Believe me it's rough having to answer constant questions about why he doesn't have his work permit yet. It's even harder to see a man feel down about himself because he can't work. I don't understand why it's taking so long for his EAD. It's not the GC for cryin' out loud.
