I think smoking should be done outside and not put on other non smokers. I'm a smoker and I don't appreciate someones cigarette smoke in my face. On the other hand people are saying alcohol has no affect on other people health wise. What about drunk drivers? Are we going to ban all drivers from buying alcohol?

Well its already a crime to drink and drive. You can't do much more than that...

If anything - I think building codes should cover smoking policies for individual apartment buildings (or even something that can be written into tenancy agreement). Many housefires are caused by discarded or dropped cigarettes - it does seem rather against the pale for one persons recreational habit to put others lives and property at risk.

many housefires are caused from candles...we're not going to put that in the tenancy agreements too?

No - but I think a landlord is within their rights to restrict certain activities which may pose a risk to a property they own. More so in communal dwellings like apartment complexes - where a fire could rapidly destroy the entire building.

Well sure, but at the same time, I think the 'no smoking cos it'll start a fire' is a bit of a reach just like 'no scented candles cos it may start a fire' Cos we can 'what if' til the cows come home....no irons! cos ppl leave them on accidentally and it could burn down the building, and so forth...

This measure, being based on health risks is another argument altogether....
