The Belmont City Council voted unanimously last night to pursue a strict law that will prohibit smoking anywhere in the city except for single-family detached residences.

Apparantly second hand smoking through apartment walls is a risk. I don't know how they measure these things, but should there be a significant health risk, particularly for children, then appartment owners probably have to implement these laws for their own protection.

I would have thought that in the LA area, the smog from transportation causes more lung damage. I am no scientist though

Works for me! I've lived in a flat before and had to put up with unwelcomed smoke seeping through my doors, windows, and ventilation system. Having to smell someone's horrible cooking is one thing but smoke? Sorry, do it where I don't have to breathe it.

However, I would sure like to know how the law is realistically enforceable. Plant cameras or special smoke detecting machines in multi-family dwellings?

Smoking on the street, in a park and even in one’s car will become illegal and police would have the option of handing out tickets if they catch someone.

it'll be interesting how they enforce smoking even while driving in your car.

Isn't it arguable with smoking who's liberty is being infringed? It has now been proved that it harms other people just by being around smokers, and measurably harming at that.

maybe they out to invent some kined of 'buble' where smokers can smoke and it makes sure that the smoker inhales of the smoke (primary AND secondary).

There's also a greater risk of catastrophic fire in apartment blocks. Burning your own home down by accident is one thing, but taking everyone else with you...?
