Step child travel and school... need advise

My 14 year old step-son would like to finish this year of school in his home country. Unfortunately his visa time period of six months will expire before school ends. Therefore we must bring him to the US before the deadline and then allow him to return to finish school. He will then join his Mother and Myself permanently in the US. This raises just a few questions. He is entering US on CR-2 Visa.

1. How long will he need to stay in the US before returning to finish school?

2. Is there any way to adjust his interview for a separate date from his mother?

3. What else, and I am sure there may be several questions, should I ask or consider before we attempt to implement our plan?

4. Could this cause any unseen problems with immigration?

I have read that the embassy can add a new visa to extent the execution date range if the beneficiary has a good reason. I would think that finishing his school year would be good enough. Someone needs to go to the embassy with him.

I'm not so sure if the information I am providing is correct so I'm hoping someone who is really in the know will jump in.

A CR2 will get a stamp at the POE. This stamp will serve as your stepchild's proof of (conditional) Legal Permanent Resident status. With that stamp on his passport, he has all the rights and responsibilities of an LPR. As such, he is free to travel overseas. The only thing that I hope others can assist with is the question of how long he can be out of the country and not be considered as having abandoned his LPR status.

Should not be a problem with his home and parent being in the US if he finishes his studies elsewhere.

I remember being 14 and stubborn If you could convince him to just come and start school, he may have an easier time with transitioning and adjusting to the USA. The younger they are when they start, the easier it will be. My stepson is 5 and school started before we had our AoS interview, so he was not able to get a SS number - at first the school said it mattered, then they admitted him without having a social security number. He started school late August and he's been doing great, he's aware he's different from the other kids but he's having a blast - you just need to contact your school district administration for registration, you can do it as soon as he enters the country since the school year has already begun.

Thank you all for the great advice. I remember myself moving at 15 and it was very difficult. And I could understand the language. But O moved from the North to the South. I knew the language but I did NOT understand the culture.
