How to change work and tax status from single to married

So now that I am married I would like to change my work status from single to married. My wife is not here living with me yet as we are at the early stages of the immigration ppwk.

Does anyone know what the rules are or where I can find them?

Your HR should have a form to fill out that will change your status.

Yep, you should contact the HR department to have your marital status changed for your various benefits. They will also provide you with a W-4 so you can adjust your exemptions for your income tax withholdings if you wish. You should also ask about whether your wife's arrival will be considered as a family status change event that will permit you to add her to the policy when she arrives. Marriage always triggers such ability, but not necessarily immigration. So, you might want to verify that. Otherwise, you have to weigh the costs of leaving her uninsured for a bit vs. buying a policy for her, etc.

Another consideration regarding whether to get medical insurance for your wife now or later has to do with pre-existing conditions. Some insurance companies will try to consider almost anything as pre-existing. Often they have exclusionary periods for pre-existing conditions. My company's insurance has a 6-month wait. So we put my wife on my insurance back in March, just so that we wouldn't hear any "coverage denied -- pre-existing condition" nonsense.

I would suggest you put your wife on your insurance at once.

Save the papers when they come in.

You can send them in with your AOS showing you have provided insurance on her, helps prove you are prepared to fully support her on arrival.

It is not needed, but it is a very nice touch.

I am thinking about how to do this too - am not ready to add G to my health ins. at least until he arrives, which could be along time from now - haven't filed yet - but would like to change my life insurance so that he is the beneficiary - I dont think he needs a SSN for me to do that. Will this be a piece of evidence I can submit to show 'bonafide marriage'?
