the primary concern with any puncture wound (which is what you have) is infection....the red streak and soreness are both indicators of such. Here are your options. 1. continue to do nothing....your body may heal itself. 2. continue to do nothing, you can develop sepsis and possibly die. 3. (same as #2 but we'll throw in gangrene and an amputation). 4. go to the ER....right now....try to avoid walking on the injured foot.

If you're unsure when the last tetanus shot was....prepare for another. It's a "better safe than sorry" scenario.

I think this sums up the situation perfectly.....soaking it just doesn't seem like enough of an effective option to me......I hope you are at the dr's now Margyw!

margy ...

the red streak is a definite sign of the beginnings of a systemic infection ... since CAPS beat me too it, i would suggest that you hightail it to your doctor or ER tomr. i'm sure stepping on a nail is NOT something that you want to lose your foot, leg or life over!!

you will be getting a tetanus shot but it's worth it since it's been so long. best of luck, hun and let us know how it's going!!!!

Thank you so very much everyone, you were right it was just as well I went. I do have an infection in it and they gave me cephelexin 500mg to be taken 4 times a day. The red line is a definate sign as many of you had said. I have just got back and I took a tab straight away , the doc said get it checked again in 2/3 days or if it goes worse to go back. I think I caught it in time and I am so grateful to everyone's advice.

Your a great bunch (F) Thank you (L)

Oh I took a copy of my vaccination sheet with me and I DID have a tetanus shot in June of 2004 so I was ok with that.

Thanks again Margy (F)

Hope you are feeling a bit better and that you have made a call to your Doctor..

WHEN TO CALL YOUR DOCTOR FOR PUNCTURE WOUND

Call Your Doctor Now (night or day) If

You think your child has a serious injury.

Puncture on the head, neck, chest, abdomen that isn't deep.

Puncture overlying a joint.

Tip of the object is broken off and missing.

Feels like something still in the wound.

Won't stand (bear weight or walk) on punctured foot.

Needle stick from used or discarded injection needle.

Sharp object or setting was very dirty (e.g., a barnyard).

No previous tetanus shots.

Dirt (debris) or pencil lead pigment is not gone after 15 minutes of scrubbing.

Severe pain.

Wound looks infected (redness, red streaks, swollen, tenderness).

Fever occurs.

DONT mess with RED STREAKS.... .. we want you around... :)

Thank you so much, I am glad I went, still in pain, but glad that I am not going to get any worse.

The funny thing about it is I was trying to wash that red streak off ths morning :help: I thought it has bled during the night and it was a streak of blood on the outside,it is very vivid.
