I stood on a nail last night. John was putting new flooring down for me and had just wanred me

Anyway being dozey I stood on one and it went in about an inch and bled very good John pulled it out Now today as expected it is very very sore,swollen and has a red streak running towards my ankle!!! I am sure I was told if there is a red streak then you have to get it seen to.

I do not want to have to go anywhere, what is the best way for me to treat it. I have used antibiotic cream and alcohol. I had a tetanus about 9 years ago, but I think I may of had one before coming here 2 years ago, I will check my papers.

Your suppose to get a tetanus every 10 years so maybe your safe. I know becouse i just got mine last month and thats what the nurse told me.

Tetnus is the first thing that comes to my mind. I can never keep track of when I last had a booster, so I always go get one. If you had a booster for your immigration medical, you might be covered BUT, I've been told the same as you WRT the red streak. That's supposed to be infection.

I'd probably do something.

Maybe some of the nurses will drop in and update us.

Thanks mex I remember being in work and I got bit by something and it swelled so I went to a walk in centre, I remember the nurse there saying something about a red line travelling from the spot of injury. I did'nt take too much notice cos I had to get back to work fast cos I had a function going on.

Definately check your tetnus records. You could possibly have debries in the wound so you might need to have it cleaned out. Nails are not the cleanist things in the world ya know and it is very easy to get infected. As for the red streak....I'm a nurse and when I heard of any "red streaks" it's not a good sign. You really need to have it looked at ASAP.

good idea Margy, I would as well...that red line isn't a good thing! I'm sure the Doc will take care of it ASAP tho..sorry that happened to you; I bet it IS sore!!

Considering the depth of the wound, you should definitely go to the doctors... Debris or bacteria can easily penetrate your surrounding tissues and/or bloodstream now that it has passed your first level of defense (skin). If an infection spreads to the blood, it can be life threatening. Hope you are okay!!

I also say go get it checked out that red streak is a concern.

When I was a kid I was kinda a little hillbilly type girl, always running around with no shoes on, as a result I became an old pro at stepping on nails. Seriously, it got to the point one time my dad sighed and said, you're going to have to learn to pull these out yourself if you're going to keep running around barefoot! For all the nails that had the pleasure of visiting my feet, never did I end up with red lines, only soreness.

Get it checked.

That has happened to me before when I was 13. I was running around my grandma's house and this stupid big nail got stuck in my food. It hurt so much but I just wouldn't let anyone touch it or try to take it out.... I was too afraid it was gonna hurt more!

My grandma put my foot in a place with warm salty water and I stayed there for about 30 minutes..... my grandma then started talking to me and distracted me so my cousin pulled it off!!! Ouch!!!!

I'm glad they did that actually because it really didn't hurt that much.

Eddited to say it was actually a sewing needle!!!
