Philadelphia police chief asks for 10,000 men to volunteer and patrol high-crime areas

Dubbed "A Call to Action: 10,000 men - It's a New Day," the effort will begin Oct. 21 with a rally and recruitment drive at the Liacouras Center, followed days afterward by the training of the volunteers to act as community "peacekeepers."

"It's time for African-American men to stand up," Johnson said in an interview. "We have an obligation to protect our women, our children and our elderly. We're going to put men on the street. We're going to train them in conflict resolution."

Johnson said volunteers will be asked to patrol in high-crime areas for two to three hours a day for "a minimum of 90 days."

A key architect of the strategy is Dennis Muhammad, chief of security for Nation of Islam Minister Louis Farrakhan. Muhammad has a Detroit-based consulting business that works with police departments on community policing and sensitivity training.

"We plan to deploy these men and distinguish them with a colored shirt or something, and our very physical presence will become a deterrent," Muhammad said. "It would be hard to commit a crime on a corner with 200 men.

"When this is successful, we hope to bottle this and take it to every major city in the country," he said.

and exactly what are these men supposed to do? just stand around and intimidate everyone into toe-ing some line? And, don't they have other things to do? Like work, chores, family issues, etc...

Philly is messed up. The burbs are nice and center city is nice but the rest of the city is totally fukced up.

I suspect the number is symbolic. Kind of like the "million man march" (remember that?). They didn't get nowhere near a million but it's still remembered as the million man march. Symbolism counts for something.

hmmm Im not so sure about this militia, which in principle is what they want to do. I could see it being just another form of "gang", one which would be legal to a certain point. How does one draw the line when faced with little training and alot of adrenolin.

From someone who actually LIVES in Philadelphia, it isn't that bad. Granted there are certain areas, like in ALL urban big cities, that are not good.....rather bad. In those areas there is a very high drug problem.......which is fueling most of the crimes. I live in one of the many other areas of the city where it's very nice.......Overbrook section....and would recommend it, in a heartbeat, to anyone who wants to move here. Center City and the 'burbs' aren't the only areas in this city where it's safe and nice to live. I work in Center City and by the rate of tourist I see EVERYDAY the crime isn't stopping ANYONE from coming to Philadelphia.
