Rudy Giuliani trashed Hillary Clinton yesterday for injecting "political venom" into the Iraq war debate by questioning the honesty of top U.S. commander Gen. David Petraeus.

The Republican ex-mayor unleashed the broadside the day after his Democratic White House rival told Petraeus that his Iraq progress report required "a willing suspension of disbelief."

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) jumped in, as well, saying "it's a 'willing suspension of disbelief' that Sen. Clinton (D-N.Y.) thinks she knows more than Gen. Petraeus about events on the ground in Iraq."

Giuliani, during an Atlanta radio interview and again in a news conference with reporters in West Virginia, said presidential candidates should display "more statesmanship than accusing American generals of the willing suspension of disbelief, just because they come to a conclusion that maybe you thought wasn't possible."

"You can disagree with Gen. Petraeus, but you can do it without this kind of name-calling," Giuliani said.

Clinton spokesman Blake Zeff fired back, "Mayor Giuliani might be content to continue the Bush Iraq policy and bury his head in the sand when it comes to ending the war, but Sen. Clinton will keep asking the tough questions in an effort to get our troops home."

In addition to receiving a right cross from Giuliani and McCain, Clinton was the target of some not-so-veiled blows from her top Democratic rival, Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.).

"Too many politicians feared looking weak and failed to ask hard questions," Obama said in a major policy speech on Iraq. "Too many took the President at his word instead of reading the intelligence for themselves."

Clinton has taken heat for failing to read the National Intelligence Estimate before voting in favor of authorizing the 2003 invasion.

Responding to Obama, Zeff said, "She is focused on ending the war in Iraq, not fighting with other Democrats."

For her part, Clinton hammered Bush for touting "misleading" troop reductions because they were scheduled to happen anyway, and demanded he be "candid" with Americans during his address tonight.

"Taking credit for this troop reduction is like taking credit for the sun coming up in the morning," she said.

Giuliani and McCain are being as political as Hillary is on this one. None of the candidates are above the foray when they comment...period.

Calling a 4 star general that they voted to put in charge a lier is going OTT. All she was doing was playing to the far left of her base.

Geez, Gary, have you got a quote or a video of just what you are accusing the Senator of saying? Let's steer clear of hearsay, lordee...

You watched it the same as I did. To be fair to Hillary she wasn't the only one calling the general a lier, all the dems were doing it. Rather pathetic really.

Here's the video of Sen. Hillary Clinton questioning Gen. Petraeus and Amb. Crocker.

This sure sounds like she is calling him a lier.

"Despite what I view as your rather extraordinary efforts in your testimony both yesterday and today, I think that the reports that you provide to us really require the willing suspension of disbelief."

Gotta love the negativity of Democrats.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.
