Not all USA banks will charge you a service fee. Wachovia didnt, just gave me a crappy exchange rate! But I always had to goto the same branch and tried to see the same teller, as most didnt have a clue how to process a Cdn cheque!

If i went to another Wachovia branch I got hassles. One time they even mailed BACK my cheques stating they had to be over $200 before they could do anything with them!1 And at time they would TRY to charge me a $75 fee, which I refused to pay! As long as I stayed with 1 branch it was fine! I actually talked the bank manager and he looked after me. Wish i had found Custom house earlier

Custom house isnt that much of a pain to set up. if one has a Scanner(fax machine), one can scan, then email stuff in. It does take a bit to get up and running, but after that it is very easy. They are very accommodating to raising your limits as well.

Coming in a bit late here but gotta jump on the Custom House bandwagon. Derek still has a car loan back in Canada, so I transfer money from our US account to his RBC account every month. Custom House was fairly painless to set up, has good rates, very friendly customer service (but of course they are Canadian, lol) and I can do it all in my bathrobe at home. The only downside, which I think is very minor, is that it takes a few days for them to move the $$$ from one account to another. But if you can plan ahead or don't need the money like right now, Custom House is the way to go! Thank you Flames for hooking me up!

Oh, and the Wachovia bank I went to DID charge us a fee when I deposited our wedding checks there. And this was after them telling me over the phone that there would be no charge. They initially wanted $75 PER CHECK, which I believe is their standard charge for all foreign banks. But I pitched a major fit and we came to an understanding. Needless to say we do not deposit Canadian checks there anymore.

I had the same question as you, and I also have an account with the RBC, so that's what I know.

You can wire money from a US bank account to RB, for me it would cost $40.

Or your husband can buy a money order from his bank, it cost us $2, to the order of you put your name, and mail it to RB asking them to deposit it on your account, and tell them the # of your account. That's what I did, and RB said that they would have to clear it first, and it might take 2 weeks.

If it is more than $1000, than your husband can buy a Bank Draft, and you mail it to RB. Good luck!

Gosh. I don't want to sound rude or anything but why would anyone go through all that when they can just do electronic transfers through Custom House for free?

Very true, I have both so I didn't have to go run around getting things faxed or scanned.

seeing as my husband didn't trust Custom House by the looks of their website (don't ask!! ), we transfer money through PayPal. I looked into setting up an RBC Centura account to do transfers online, but they aren't equipped to do that.

My Sister in the U.S. uses TD/TD Waterhouse to transfer funds, has been for a few years now. She does have to call them on the phone to transfer to her TD account in Canada and it takes about a day, however no big hassle. I'm not sure how good the rate is, she prob isn't either, but I'll ask her for details today, just for comparison.

Ch takes around 3 to 4 BUSINESS days to do it electronically (free) They do offer a wire service which I believe is faster BUT then you do get charged a fee.

Is there any way to set up automatic monthly, weekly, etc. (scheduled) transfers through Custom House?

I dont think so. ijusttook a look and didnt see anything. One can do what is called a "forward" When it (IF) gets to a certain rate that you want, the transaction will start then. Once your acct is set up, it takes like 30 seconds to do a transaction, super easy. But takes 3-4 Business days for ur $$$ to arrive in ur acct.
