Can someone explain to me what the reason would be for not fasting while you are traveling on an airplane? What is the big burden? It's not like you're walking to your destination.

Well back in the day...talkin' in the 700's here...they did walk, ride a camel, whatever to their destination so it would be a hardship in that case to fast. I think that's why they give a specific length to go by as far as miles, etc. Since the rules are timeless, people tend to still stick by them and give out fatwas saying that you still don't have to fast. That's just my take on it.

I would fast but just go by the time of destination, which would be the US. So...if it's time to break fast in the US, then eat.

I see what you're saying, but I think doing that is sort of a copout, since we no longer have to ride camels! JMHO. If it were me, I'd break fast when the sun went down...

My ex used to break his fast whenever he travel to or from Yemen during Ramadan. I highly doubt anyone is gonna burn in hell over misinterpretation of this "rule". That's the problem, it's so unclear that there's room for misinterpretations (not only with this but with several other things). As long as you make it up later I don't see the harm in it.

Your question made a lot of sense to me. I was thinking about it on my way to that greek restaurant (btw their avgolemono soup and their baklava is out of this WORLD!!! lol), and even though we don't ride camels anymore traveling still does take it's toll on you, so I can see how we would still get a dispensation for it, especially on a long trip. I mean they suggest you drink a lot of water while in flight but we can't while we're fasting you know? Then again it got me to thinking what the heck do pilots and flight attendants do..............do they just NEVER fast during Ramadan?

See what happens when I think?

I sure hope that if I'm on a trans-Atlantic flight that my pilot is not fasting  !!!

My husband says that one should NOT fast while traveling (not that he is an authority, but he certainly had an extensive Islamic education in Morocco).

Bon voyage!

There's no burden in air travel? When's the last time you flew? 1977? ;)
