Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

Those answers didn't really answer the question........

They do, actually. But like most you are too engrossed looking at the trees and miss the grandeur of the forest in the process. Read the responses within this thread and then read the feelings within your heart and you will know. Knowledge lies within.

It can't be cheap to run a site this large

Those answers didn't really answer the question........

No, they didn't. I'll give it a stab - although I'm sure my answer will get derided as somehow anti admin. At any rate, this was explained to me by a friend of mine who owns a few different sites (non immigration related).

A site this size needs the revenue generated from adverts and Google ads, etc. to support itself. VJ is on a dedicated server which costs big bucks. It also advertises with Yahoo which costs an annual fee. There are usually costs associated with different hacks, upgrades, updates, etc. to the board itself.

Generally, those costs would not come out of the admin's own pocket. Sure, the site is a user-defined, web-based forum for the purpose of sharing information.....but generally, that doesn't come at no cost to the owner.

I doubt we'll ever get a VJ specific answer, so my friend's explanation is the closest I've been able to come to.

methinks it is a privately owned website, funded by the owner.

in the three years I have been here, I have yet to click on the ads. Hence me thinking it is funded by a private source. Speaking as someone who has dealt with Google's Adsense program, the ads have to be clicked a heck of a lot each day to make it profitable.

True, my best guess is the google ads about cover the expenses for server space, software etc. Not really a for profit approach, like some want to depict it. If it was for profit it would certainly look different around here. And for those hoping to get a profit/loss table... not likely to happen as this is still a privately owned site and the owners, whoever they are, do not have to provide answers to this at all.

I just don't get the stubbornness of some ppl to always ask the same questions over and over again. I mean the ads are visible... everyone can count 1+1... it really starts to become silly.

Oh yeah, I have never thought this site was for-profit. If it was, we'd be paying for membership ---oh and remember the discussion we had a long time ago about VJ merchandise? Man, some of the suggestions were hysterical -- I was actually going to buy something but they never went ahead and produced stuff. Oh well!

Whoa....hold on there. Let's get some facts straight! Even not-for-profit entities make profit. Profit being the difference between operating expenses and incoming revenue, dues, ad revenues, whatever. While the classification, NPO or non-profit organisation suggests otherwise, there may be a lot of internalized profit and while it is not generally distributed in the form of dividends like a for-profit entity, they use that profit to pay themselves a salary ;)
