We are moving a short distance, about 130 miles, for our move from Canada to the US. I was wondering if anyone else had a short move and hired a moving company or what company you might have rented from to do it yourself? What complications might we have using a moving company to cross the border or is that even possible? It seems U pack is not an option for us, we already checked.

Thanks!

You may want to try one of the big companies for safety and reliability (I've heard horror stories about UHAUL, so stay away from those guys). Too bad UPack is not an option for you. There should be no complications -- as long as you give them all the paperwork and, if the goods are yours, make sure you cross the border first. Hope this helps

I went the U-haul route, and it worked out for me! But there are a lot of U-haul horror stories out there. i think it mainly depends where you get the truck from. i got mine from a small outfit and I expressed my concern over U-hauls crappy reputation.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Thanks for the info, I'm pretty sure that's the route we'll be taking.

Just make sure u get it from a good u-haul dealer. i was in a small town and they only had 1! But he was good, BUT he couldn't gaurentee me a truck until closer to my move. Wasnt a huge deal as i could have gone to halifax and gotten one. Ensure u check over the truck prior to accepting it, as U-haul has many clunkers!! And not all U-haul trucks can cross the border , but it shouldnt be a problem.

I think most of the horror stories revolve around 1) trucks not being properly maintained thus break down and 2) truck not being there when one is picking it up!

I think all of us have seen U-hauls broken down on the road!! I do find out of the many do it urself moving trucks, uhauls tend to be in crappy shape!! Mine was ok though.

I guess one can't totally blame uhaul if a truck isnt available. Some people hold on to their trucks longer than they are suppose to, which screws everything up!! In a big city that shouldnt be a problem, But if ur in a hick town of greenwood NS, ur screwed, lol

not a happy uhaul site,lol: http://www.uhaul-sucks.com/

I know I considered driving cross-continent to save on moving costs and stuff in a u-haul, but we nixed that idea once we figured that 1) driving across the continent in winter = bad idea, 2) driving across the continent alone = very bad idea, and 3) in a u-haul = extremely bad idea.

Liz, just google "u-haul" and see how many horrific news stories are on the first page of searches.

I moved in Dec. If I had to do it again, i would still go with u-haul!! I ensured the truck they gave me was suitable. Yes they have a bad rep, and in local moves I NEVER use them, lol but one doesn't have that many choices when doing it urself from Canada to the USA. And I like to drive

I must admit the truck inside was a bit dirty! i actually had to spend some time cleaning it. But Im sort of a clean freak, and hate driving a dirty vehicle.

Keep in mind--How many people report on anything when it works fine(not many)?? BUT when something breaks/bad service, they sure let everyone know then.

We used U-haul when I moved from California to Saskatchewan 12 years ago. The truck was fine and things worked out well for us. We had more bad luck in picking cheap hotels along the way. Yikes! We are planning to use U-haul again...mostly because the quotes we received from professionals were $11,000! Sorry, this isn't about a short move.

=( I just made a *tentative* reservation with U-haul for mid December.

$384 +56 insurance..

doesn't sound too bad.. but the stories do.. =(

but I took all the details down so I can cancel when I need to..

I just booked tentatively also. To go from Windsor, ON to Jackson, MI will cost me $137. I don't live in Windsor, I live in a small town about 30 minutes from Windsor and that price includes picking my things up there and then going to Jackson, MI.
