Yeah!! Finally got my interview letter today. My interview is October 10, 2007. Does anyone know if I have to bring all of my belongings across the border when I come to the U.S. with my visa? Can I wait until after we get married and I can cross the border freely? I have an entire house full of furniture and personal belongings that I will need to bring and I don't want to make any definate moving plans until I know I have the visa. I also need to know if I can take a U-haul truck from Canada to the U.S. and what paperwork the border requires. Thanks!!

I'm no K1 expert, so others will chirp in. K1 is a ONE time entry, until you get Advance parole or AOS You have to stay in the USA. So once u activate it,DON'T leave the USA (even going back to Canada!!!)

Yes you can bring ur belongings with you when you cross into the usa. One has up to TEN years to bring it over. I rented a u-haul truck. Drove from NS to DC. No special paperwork, just have a inventory list of your belongings. There are topics here in the Canada forum on moving companies and what is required (think most moving companies need a copy of ur i-94 (think thats the form) before they can move ur stuff across the border

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I'm not going to correct you flames! haha You're right. A K-1 visa is only good for one entry. After arriving in the US with your visa, you can apply for Advanced Parole, which might take up to 90 days to get. This will allow you to return to Canada before getting your Green Card, and get back into the US. If you plan on moving your things when you activate your visa, yes, there are forms to fill out. I don't know if there are any listed here on VJ, someone could pipe in if there is. Basically if you make a list of what you're bringing, and correspond it to a numbered box system, you should be alright. Writing down serial numbers of electronics is a good idea...

Also check out Customs and Revenue Canada about moving plants, and animals. Vaccinations etc. must be up to date with animals I believe. As well, if you're bringing your car over, you'll have to have a letter from the car manufacturer.

Phew...I'm exhausted just thinking about this stuff!

Personally, except for some "sentimental" things, I just gave away or sold all my stuff in Canada, and got anything I needed once I was here.

Another thing I caution you about, is making a "move" date until you have the visa in hand! When you get your visa, you'll have six months in which to activate it, so that should give you enough time to sort, pack, sell, list and move!

Thank you for the advice everyone, it's been very helpful. The only problem is I have a 15 year old and a newborn baby that are very anxious to go live in there new home in the U.S. So, it doesn't give me much time to pack everything up and start our new lives. My fiance is very anxious to have his new baby boy in the U.S. full time and not just visiting.
