Worthwhile charities

I suspect you, like we do, often receive calls from charitable organizations (even though we are supposed to be on the no-call list) and wonder if this is indeed a cause or charitable organization you wish to support with your hard earned dollars.

This is a website called "Charity Navigator" that lists all of the charities registered in the US and provides you a financial breakdown of how they spend their funds, as well as a rating for how well they spend their funds, and how effective they are. I have found it extremely useful!

You can search by charity name, by category, or by topics. It is well worth bookmarking so you have it for quick access when those telemarketers or volunteers call asking for your support:-).

Yes, as I found out, they are exempt from the no-call list - which is why I found the posted website very useful:-).

Thanks, Kathryn. I suspect there are some unscrupulous people that will deliberately use say names over the phone that sound similar to legitimate organizations. I'd never commit to donating money by phone. I'd instead ask them to mail their request to me. :)

I just tell em to send me something in the mail...to make sure that they have registered with the AGs' office and that they are a valid charity.

They never do...

I finally got rid of the never ending money drain. I called the plumber, and got the problem fixed. I wish her the best.

Actually, that is what I do - I go to this website while I am on the phone to them - after asking them how much of their funding goes to actual projects and how much to fundraising and administrative costs. Then, after they can't tell me which is almost all the time, I look up their name and have an immediate answer. Anything that uses less than 75% of its money for programmes doesn't get a dime from me. One called today with a name very similar to a well known and respected charity for children - when I looked them up it showed that they spent nearly 86% of the funds they raised on fundraising! And they offer a 100% tax receipt. They didn't get a dime.
